“No birds … no Kiwi, Tui, Weka, Kereru … all gone” – an observation on the West Coast from an 82 year old

Graham says:
“Just before Christmas my worker and I were clearing back overhanging foliage from a footpath in a built up area. Along came an elderly gentleman on his little scooter thing they have these days. He wanted to stop for a yarn so we obliged. He was 82 and had just made one last journey back home to the area he grew up in … the West coast. He went to all his childhood and teenage years haunts and spent time, a lot of it in and on bush tracks.

I asked him did he notice much in the way of change since those days?

The Birds he said … the place used to be full of native birds but all he saw on this whole trip there was one Weka. Everything has gone. The bush is now dead. No Kiwi, no Weka or Tui, even the Kea had gone.

“The place used to be lousy with Keruru, now nothing. He has no doubt whatsoever that 1080 is to blame. It’s just destroyed everything.

Where he lives now, and I have no idea where that is, he said he had planted lots of Kowhai and every year the Tui came and he used to sit on the front porch and watch them … this year …  nothing … not one bird.

But of course a lifetime’s observation is unscientific and counts for nothing.”

EWR comment:

“… a lifetime’s observation is unscientific and counts for nothing” … note that even the independent science from bona fide scientists counts for nothing. Only the ‘science’ that the authorities sign off is considered acceptable. Remember the recent post citing Reihana Robinson in ‘The Killing Nation’ and the revelation that 70% of the Department of Conservation’s ‘scientific’ studies justifying the aerial distribution of 1080 are done in-house?

So called anti-1080 people aren’t actually terrorists. They simply want clean, non poisoned water & food, at least 70% independent science … & pest control that really does target pests without killing our natives. It is simply not acceptable to kill 10K birds in one single 1080 drop.

If you are new to the 1080 poisoning program, a must watch is Poisoning Paradise, the doco made by the GrafBoys (banned from screening on NZ TV, yet a 4x international award winner). Their website is tv-wild.com. Their doco is a very comprehensive overview with the independent science to illustrate the question marks that remain over the use of this poison. There are links also on our 1080 resources page to most of the groups, pages, sites etc that will provide you with further information to make your own informed decision on this matter.

  1. This is so timely and relevant, I ventured into the Manawatu Gorge a couple of days ago (3/1/19). I did go up to the “Gorge Track” from Ashhurst side, about an hour in and again an hour back. It really is like a dead forest! I did hear a couple of birds in the lower regions nothing up higher. There is no sign of Possum damage and in saying so no dead animals anywhere. Plenty of bait stations, both possum and feral (the rotten egg traps). No sign of 1080 bait although all the signs where up advising of this. And of course people still bringing in their dogs, can’t they read the signs? This reminded me of when I first came to NZ around 1979, I went up to Apiti all the way up to the top of the hills and it really scared me shitless, it looked like a dead planet and I couldn’t get out there quick enough. Why can’t we stop this people, get with it!!

  2. I just walked the gorge walk in the Manawatu as I have many many times ..NOT ONE BIRD NOT ONE SOUND . I rang DOC we were so concerned . I said it was like walking through a death camp . I got abused and hung up on as I was ‘no scientist’ right in our waterways as well

    1. ConcernedcitizenofNZ: Maybe put it in polite writing to them and keep a copy. Send it to me as well if you like as I keep comments like that. Add them to other posts about the birds. I can leave out your name. And yes, I’m hearing from others they just hang up on people. They seem to be imagining people who ask questions are terrorists & we are not.

  4. We are like small children who have discovered a vast array of “toys” and we are playing with them with no idea that they may be dangerous. We now see the results of the quest for money driving the spread of technology that in the near term seems to be safe but in the long term is very very damaging. I here speak of poisons like 1080 in NZ but I look around and see this long term damage in every sphere of our existence: nuclear power and its waste that is killing the oceans, RF radiation that is slowly killing our people, asbestos that is still killing, and of course gas and oil emissions causing global warming that will soon kill us all. We are intelligent but not cautious and certainly not wise. We had it all but soon it will all be gone. We see the list of animals that are now extinct. The fish and birds and insects are disappearing. So bloody sad. The only thing now is to try to enjoy what remains.

    1. I agree parsecsystems … only point I differ in is, I would say ‘they’, not ‘we’. It is the corporations & their greed that are wrecking everything. And they persecute & silence folk like us who oppose them.

      1. I agree also Pam.
I have mused about this for a long while and here is what I have found. Corporations have been created to make money for shareholders, the more the better. Most of us are shareholders in some way or the other and really want as much return on our investments as possible and we usually do not look closely at what the corporation is doing. If the share values or the dividends are not what is wanted then the CEO, CFO, and others will soon be replaced by others who will steer the corporation in the direction that will make more money for the shareholders. And usually the management are sociopaths who are intelligent and really care nothing about themselves and what the corporation will do for them.
As Pogo said “We have met the enemy and they are us” (or something similar)
So, we have created a monster entity that is slowly killing us and our world. This is something like Frankenstein’s Monster out of control and certainly not increasing the social good.
Maybe the Yellow Jackets in Europe are the beginning of a rebellion or revolution against the status quo which is dictated primarily by the large multinational corporation. I think that the future is going to be very messy.

        1. Ah yes, check out the corporation page. I used to hammer that thought a lot but only occasionally lately. But yes they’re the root of all our probs really. Not to mention the fact our country is a corporation as are also its former govt departments. Technically a corporation can’t govern let alone democratically (that long gone illusion). During the ’80s I recall being told that there’d come a time when corporations would control govt which I found hard to envisage but yes , it’s here. They do. Insane. ANd again tis ‘they’ not we who created this monster. By stealth.
