In April 2010 Dr Meriel Watts from the Pesticide Action Network NZ (PANANZ) wrote to Environment Waikato regarding 10-20 year consents for the dispersal of 1080 poison. At the grafboysblogspot.com her letter is recorded …

“As you are no doubt aware,” she wrote … “1080 is classed by the World Health Organisation as an Extremely Hazardous pesticide (Class 1a WHO). You may not be aware that as such it falls within the category of Highly Hazardous Pesticides for which the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is seeking a global phase out.

That Environment Waikato is contemplating 10 or 20 year consents to use, let alone aerially disperse, 1080, when a UN agency is promoting a global phase out of all such pesticides is extraordinary. I can only assume that you officers are not aware of the situation.

To issue consents of 10 or more years duration also flies in the face of ERMA’s concern about such on-going widespread dispersal of 1080 in the environment, and their support for more research into alternatives. There will be no room for introduction of alternatives in the EW region if these consents are granted.

1080 is a broad-spectrum poison: it kills all oxygen-breathing animals and organisms. This alone is reason enough to cease dispersing it into the environment. It indiscriminately kills and contaminates everything from the insects that underpin the native fauna food chain to precious native birds, dogs and farm animals.

There are so many recorded instances that there is no need to elaborate on them here. Nor the fact that the suffering of these animals on the way to death is extremely inhumane.

That New Zealand has such a history of poisoning its indigenous species, livestock and companion animals is a shame we have to live with. But we do not need to perpetuate it. Thankfully the era of poisoning everything we don’t like is passing, and intelligent new, targeted approaches to pest management are taking its place.

It is time now for Environment Waikato to move forward with the rest of the world, and introduce alternatives. Trapping has been shown to be an effective method of controlling possums, at the same time utilising a valuable resource for the benefit of the national economy, and trapping technology is continually improving. On the other hand, years of experience of 1080 dispersal has shown that this approach is not sustainable, it has to be repeated at regular intervals, each time with its negative consequences for the environment.

Pesticide Action Network therefore urges you to reject the idea of extended resource consents for aerial dispersal of 1080, and to instead focus your resources on rapid introduction of sustainable, environmentally friendly, and socially supportive alternatives such as trapping.

Yet still NZ advertises itself as clean and green. How far from clean and green can a country get one would have ask? All that aside from the cruel death these animals die.   3. hello there I am from Australia I thought 1080 was banned several year ago but the r goin to lay 1080 on the land around Holsworthy army barracks here in New South Wales for the eradication of rabbits wild dogs & foxes we have taken the foxes & rabbits homes away from them to build all theses houses its just not right to kill them off in such a cruel way just for human justification so sad what has australi come to not happy its not a land of the free no more so many rules & regulations for one & not the other so sad

    1. Hello narelle. Thanks for your feedback on Australia. I’d heard it was being dropped there. Is that the justification for it? New housing/building? As you’d see the reason given here is to save the birds although it’s killing them actually. I believe there are other agendas going down. Keep us posted anyway on what happens there 🙂

    I also find it shocking that the active ingredient in 1080 poison is fluoride! The New Zealand government has so far added to this highly toxic industrial waste product to about half of New Zealand’s drinking water supplies under the pretext that it helps prevent tooth decay! So criminal.

    1. Thanks for the feeback & link Erwin (& you’re welcome!). The Graf Boys are doing a great work on 1080. And the fluoride, yes, we’re poisoned from many directions. Chlorine is the other one that goes unnoticed a bit. Spread the word 🙂

  5. It is a real problem when the success of a “state owned enterprise” like Animal Control Products, depends upon the mass dissemination of 1080. Our tax dollars in New Zealand actually subsidise the poisoning of our environment, as the government (i.e. us tax payers) owns the 1080 factory. 1080 kills more native birds than it saves. 1080 keeps DOC busy. NZ Forest and Bird has simply become a propaganda tool to justify this practice and make the public feel good about it. The aerial dumping is diabolical. The forests are silent after this poison is dumped from the air. School children are “programmed” to think it is a good idea. Using this product in bait stations is not completely unreasonable, but that is not enough to insure a profit for Animal Control products Inc. . Dumping it from the air is akin to government sanctioned criminal insanity, but it creates the “market” for the product. . The brush tail possum is inherently resistant to fluoroacetate poison. This chemical is part of its natural diet (in low levels from a certain plant) in Australia. No effort is made to even count dead possums after an aerial dump. A “success” is defined by a completely indirect measure of the bovine TB rate in the region. Nationwide, the rate is about 5% or less. It is a bit like the government congratulating itself for not finding a needle in the haystack, (when they don’t find TB and congratulate themselves on another successful 1080 drop). There are much safer, more specific poisons that can be used to kill rodents. Rabbits are profoundly sensitive to a product in avocados that is completely harmless to the environment and other species. Not patentable for corporate profit, so not much interest. We must hold our politicians accountable to shutting down our obligations to State owned enterprises that have ceased to serve the greater good.

  6. First it was blame the possum for the demise of our Native birds, now that has been proved false and that some photo’s which are used regularly are actually contrived, they are false as admitted by the studio which took them. Now they are demonising rats, Stoats and Cats.
    If the first lot of propaganda was proved false, how false is this ongoing story?
    Why the need to lie to spread this stuff?
    And yet our Native Bird numbers is still in decline after 63 years of 1080 Poison, non native species bird numbers continue to climb in spite of being subjected to the exact same “pests”.
    I suggest the reason is that 1080 Poison is not spread in the habitat which the non native birds usually frequent.
