Whanganui, scene of recent 1080 protests, still awaits investigation of 1080 health concerns raised by a Doctor over one decade ago

Whanganui is the scene of health concerns regarding 1080 that were raised by the late Dr Peter Scanlon over a decade ago and which have never been fully investigated by the authorities. He said in a submission in 2010:

Given the “scientific ignorance” of those who proclaim human safety when doing aerial drops near water supplies in the West Coast, Whanganui, Coromandel, Levin, Hutt Valley and other regions of New Zealand and the real lack of safety data, especially for NZ’s most vulnerable human populations, our unborn, young and old and those with chronic illnesses, one really must question whether it is ethical to use such a poorly studied chemical from a human health risk perspective. The native flora & fauna are replaceable. TB ridden cows are replaceable but the future health of our children & our most vulnerable is not.

“I nga wa o mua” − The past informs the present. ” Foresight should be sought as hindsight is dearly bought”

Thanks to Stewart Shand for the video

Environmentalists who protested recently against the slathering of the Class 1A Ecotoxin 1080 all over our once pristine environment (contaminating/poisoning our food, air & water) are not going away any time soon.

More than 200  gathered in Whanganui recently (1/5/19) to make known their concern for the welfare of both people and the environment. As you’ll see below in Carol Sawyer’s article, poison is big business and it’s expanding & set to be privatized.

Firstly though, Whanganui is a location of concern that the late Dr Peter Scanlon brought to the attention of NZ authorities regarding a cluster of health concerns following an aerial 1080 drop …

“A concerned Maori woman contacted me and presented to the Waitangi Tribunal evidence for the Whanganui Inquiry last year her concerns that 1080 may have been implicated in causing a cluster of miscarriages, stillbirths and congenital malformations to the children of pregnant Maori women following aerial drops and raised the question of bowel cancer in some adult Maori being possibly linked to environmental 1080 exposures through contaminated food and water sources. The current scientific gaps which the ERMA 2007 reassessment failed to address and assumptions based on out−dated or poorly studied science for human risk considerations cannot exclude the possibility of 1080 having such adverse health effects in Whanganui or other NZ rural communities The current medical system cannot easily investigate such concerns.”

Read more about Dr Scanlon’s concerns at this link:

IN 2009 TWO MIDWIVES URGED THEIR PREGNANT PATIENTS TO LEAVE TOWN BEFORE A 1080 DROP – HEAR THE LATE DR SCANLON SPEAK ON THE LACK OF RESEARCH ON THE POTENTIAL RISKS TO THE UNBORN

Most importantly, as he says in the video clip in that article:

“Where are the cancer causing or carcinogenicity studies? … there aren’t any;

Where are the reproductive studies, particularly focusing on female eggs? … there aren’t any;

Where are the developmental studies, early exposure to brain, immune system? … there aren’t any;

Where are the long term chronic exposure studies looking at mitochondrial DNA content and mutation rates? there aren’t any.

There’s a lot of doubts about this substance, it’s dangerous.”

As far as I know there has yet been no investigation into Dr Scanlon’s concerns. We need to be asking ourselves, ‘why not?’ We need to be asking our authorities, why not? Why are they not sharing the same concerns this good Doctor voiced about the health of NZ citizens? About vulnerable pregnant women’s exposure to 1080 when it’s clear there have been NO LONG TERM STUDIES PROVING ITS SAFETY for them & their unborn?

In addition, as retired Doctor Charlie Baycroft has told us over and over, 1080 kills people, and if you die from 1080 poisoning, nobody will know because the authorities are bullying his profession not to test for it. Take note and peruse our Suspected Poisoning page.

Finally, Carol Sawyer’s article below outlines the history of  1080 suppliers in NZ & elsewhere

PROTEST OUTSIDE ORILLION (1080 BAIT FACTORY) IN WHANGANUI, 1st MAY, MAYDAY, 2019

By Carol Sawyer

Animal Control Products Ltd, Whanganui, trading as Orillion, is the state-owned enterprise (SOE) that manufactures 1080 baits for New Zealand.

Until mid-2018 this was the only place that manufactured 1080 baits in New Zealand. Now the NZ government is set to privatise everything, which is even worse news !

Mid-2018, Pest Control Research Ltd (PCR Ltd) in Rolleston near Christchurch, was given consent to manufacture 1080 baits. The first baits it produced were used to poison the Hope and Cascade River catchments in South Westland in August, 2018.

Now the Dept of Conservation’s “Battering the Birds” programme is using 50% baits from PCR Ltd and 50% from Orillion.

In March, 2019, ANOTHER factory, Invasive Pest Control / Connovation Ltd in Auckland, was granted consent to manufacture 1080 baits.

And so it grows…..

When are NZ authorities going to take toxic 1080 bait storage seriously?

WHEN IS NEW ZEALAND GOING TO TAKE TOXIC 1080 BAIT STORAGE SERIOUSLY?

By Carol Sawyer

With the recent revelations that a 1080 storage shed at Haast, South Westland, was invaded by floodwaters last month, it is surely well past time to look at this lax situation.

LEVIN, HOROWHENUA :

In Levin, in January, 2018, a building owned by the Horizons Regional Council, and used for 1080 bait storage, caught fire :

“Controversial pest control poison 1080 was stored in a Levin depot that was burgled and torched last week.

The fire tore through the Horizons Regional Council depot on Thursday night, destroying equipment and melting vehicles.”

Horizons Regional Council chief executive, Michael McCartney said “…all run-off associated with putting out the fire was contained onsite and there are no environmental or health concerns”!!!!

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/index.cfm…

Yet the attached letter from Orillion, the NZ government-owned factory in Whanganui that manufactures 1080 baits, states clearly:

“The burning of products containing even low concentrations of sodium fluoroacetate (1080) may release toxic hydrogen fluoride gas of sufficiently high concentration to cause a danger to humans in the vicinity”.

WHITIANGA, COROMANDEL PENINSULA:

In Whitianga, in 2017, 23.7 tonnes of 1080 baits were stored by the Dept of Conservation at the back of the ‘Liquor King Building’ for 4 1/2 months. pending an aerial 1080 operation in the area. Locals were later informed that the district Fire Chief had been unaware of this. The Thames-Coromandel District Council was also reportedly unaware. The building was surrounded by two supermarkets and next door to a “Placemakers” store. Residential housing was just metres away, over the fence. On the evening of loading up, ( October 17, 2017 ), the air was thick with dust, which would have landed all over people’s lawns and vegetable gardens. The residents were not informed about what was going on.

BLENHEIM, MARLBOROUGH:

At Tua Marina, near Blenheim, up to 200 tonnes of 1080 poison baits are allowed to be stored at any one time at 121 Thomas Road, at Impact Storage Ltd ( appropriate name!), just a few kilometres from the local primary school and beside the Wairau River.
NB: 200 tonnes of 1080 baits contain enough pure 1080 to kill 4 million x 70 kg human beings and make another 4 million very ill indeed!

TE ANAU, FIORDLAND:

An old laundry building in Te Anau, 52 Caswell Road, is reportedly used for storing 1080 poison baits before aerial 1080 operations in Fiordland.

JJ Nolan’s Transport Ltd, of Haast has been seen unloading 1080 baits there. The building is at the entrance to Northern Southland Transport’s depot. Northern Southland Transport Ltd deliver 1080 baits to aerial 1080 operations.

I was told “DoC have a lease on the old launderette building in Caswell St. They have stored 1080 in the past. ‘Fiordland Jet’ rent it from DoC when it is not needed.”

On the other side of the building, at 48 Caswell Road is “Safer Parking” !!!

“DoC spokeswoman Trish Grant said there were 73 tonnes of non-toxic bait and 150 tonnes of toxic bait in storage in the port industrial area.”!

150 tonnes of 1080 baits contain enough pure 1080 poison ( at 0.15% ) to kill over 3 million people, and make another 3 million seriously ill.
(LD50 is 0.5 – 2 mg per kg bodyweight)

Merrick Allan’s eyewitness report on a ‘Solly’s’ freight truck being loaded at lunchtime, 13th October, 2014.

(It is important to note here that Sollys Freight has REFUSED to transport 1080 baits since 2014 ! The big drops in 2016 and 2017 for Kahurangi were carted by T Croft Ltd of Greymouth.)  :

  • “the ‘Anchor Bar and Grill Restaurant’ entrance is only 50 metres away from the loading site.
  • no barriers or notices, no health warnings, and loading and unloading being done with trucks no more than 10 metres from the public footpath.
  • no barriers, the gates were open
  • no police, anyone could just have wandered on in
  • the truck did have a toxic sign on front
  • the bags clearly stated on pallet wrap 1080 toxic
  • the loader-driver was wearing overalls only
  • stench of cinnamon drifting out on to the road

a DoC worker came out and asked what we were up to, as we had taken photos.
I commented that the practice was despicable, storing 1080 50 metres from a restaraunt/bar and loading it at lunch time. I was told by the female DoC worker, “It’s wrapped and sealed” i commented that must be why I can smell cinnamon, and poison…
I also asked “What is the antidote for 1080 ?” She replied “Water”!”

Pest control is big business: 1080, the curious trail of sourcing, manufacture & investment

By Carol Sawyer

1080 POISON/BAIT MANUFACTURE – TULL, ORILLION & PEST CONTROL RESEARCH LTD & 1080 USE … DoC IS ONLY HALF THE PROBLEM!

Newly confirmed information – Orillion’s sales of 1080 baits comprise:

To DoC – 30 to 50% per annum
To Ospri/TBfree – 20 to 30% per annum
To Regional Government – Up to 10% per annum

Predator Free NZ, Zero Invasive Predators (ZIP), (and maybe the Island Eradication Group) account for the rest it seems.

On 9 April, 2019, Claire Ogilvy sent this OIA request to the state-owned factory in Whanganui that makes 1080 baits, Animal Control Products Ltd, trading as ‘Orillion’:

“Can I please get an official response to the following questions:

Where does Animal Control Products Limited currently source the Compound 1080 used in bait manufacture? Are Connell Brothers Ltd still the distributors? If not, who is?

Does Animal Control Products Limited manufacture Compound 1080 itself, or has it ever manufactured Compound 1080 itself, in New Zealand, or had it manufactured on behalf Animal Control Products Limited by any other manufacturer or entity?

How much contingency stock do you hold?”

The very prompt reply is attached.

(If only government departments were so quick to respond, but they usually make us wait to the limit, 20 working days, and then add some.)

This reply engendered further questions… (see screenshots 5 through 8 below).

To me, some of the most important information to come out of the correspondence is this. Why? Because everyone focuses on the Dept of Conservation and what these figures tell us are that DoC is only half the problem!

Orillion’s sales of 1080 baits comprise :

To DoC – 30 to 50% per annum
To Ospri – 20 to 30% per annum
To Regional government – Up to 10% per annum

Presumably Predator Free NZ, Zero Invasive Predators (ZIP), and maybe the Island Eradication Group account for the rest.

PEST CONTROL RESEARCH LTD. ROLLESTON

4. PEST CONTROL RESCH ROLLESTON - SIGN TAKEN DOWN AFTER A PROTEST THERE.jpg
4) Pest Control Research Ltd, 8 Centrum Lane, Izone Business Park, Rolleston

As well as ACP Ltd/Orillion, there is a factory in Rolleston, near Christchurch, Pest Control Research Ltd/Kiwicare Corporation, that has been manufacturing 1080 baits since mid-2018, when it finally received consent to produce them. Up until that time it had only been making the non-toxic ‘prefeed’ baits.

The Dept of Conservation is now sourcing 50% of its 1080 baits for its ‘Battle For Our Birds’ programme from PCR Ltd, and the other 50% from Orillion.

PCR Ltd (Rolleston) is 49% owned by the West Coast Regional Council and 51% owned by Pest Control Investors Ltd.

Pest Control Investors Ltd has one shareholder, Kumara Trustee Ltd.

Kumara Trustee Ltd has one shareholder, Pest Control Investors Ltd.!

So the investors are well hidden and we do not (at this stage) know who they are.

************************************************************

The attached response from Animal Control Products Ltd (Orillion) is puzzling in one regard. The correspondent, John ?, says:

“1080 technical grade material has never been made on a commercial scale in New Zealand and Orillion has never been involved in the manufacture of the compound in New Zealand or internationally”

How, then, does this tie in with the written answers to questions from former Green Party leader Jeanette Fitzsimons by Jim Sutton, NZ Parliament, November 2002, where he appears to state pure 1080 was made in NZ – at the very least between 1998 and 2002!? (See below).

It seems clear that, unlike Orillion, the Rolleston factory, Pest Control Research Ltd, is not sourcing its pure 1080 poison from Tull Chemical Co, Oxford, Alabama.

Not only does John ? (ACP Ltd) say today
“We are unaware as to where the source of 1080 for our competitor PCR originates from although China most likely has capability to manufacture” …

but a reliable source of my own wrote a few days ago”
“Rumours suggest China. There is no way to find out. MPI know but won’t tell, despite Orillion’s source having been widely published by government agencies and others. Questions probably need to be asked.”

PS I am not attaching all the photos in this email – just the screenshots of the correspondence. “Tull 4” was sent after the first reply ( Tull One ), so they are not in order:

The NZ Govt is teaching your child that Class 1A ecotoxin 1080, banned by most countries, is ‘not very dangerous to humans’

Note: As your kids head back to school, keep an eye out for the poison propaganda. IMO it is not acceptable to send an official text book message to young children that a class 1A ecotoxin, classed by WHO as ‘highly hazardous’, is not very dangerous to humans. There is no antidote to this poison & it is frequently found lying around for weeks on end after aerial drops.  (21/1/2019)

Over all, this item featuring a Year 10 Science book & its fairly ho hum description of the toxicity of 1080, appears to be normalizing the use of poisons.

Dr Meriel Watts says about 1080 poison:

“1080 is classed by the World Health Organisation as an Extremely Hazardous pesticide (Class 1a WHO). You may not be aware that as such it falls within the category of Highly Hazardous Pesticides for which the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is seeking a global phase out.

There is no antidote for 1080. Poisoned  by it, you have no hope of being saved. However, our esteemed authorities in higher places have seen fit to describe it to our children as not very dangerous to humans. Wherever you stand on the use of 1080, be it for or against, I would still call such a description of an acutely toxic poison for your children’s information, highly irresponsible.

THIS IS WHAT OUR YEAR 10 NEW ZEALAND SCHOOL PUPILS ARE BEING TAUGHT!

This is from Science Plus, Book 2, Year 10. Why is the government allowed to teach our children lies?

Read the data on 1080 straight from the manufacturer’s info:

HAZARD IDENTIFIERS:
Priority Identifiers – Danger. Deadly Poison. Keep out of reach of
children. Ecotoxic.
Secondary Identifiers – Acutely toxic. May be fatal if swallowed,
inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Repeated oral exposure may
cause reproductive or developmental damage. When handling open
containers or baits, wear protective equipment as indicated below.
Toxic to terrestrial vertebrates. Take measures to reduce the risk of nontarget
animals being exposed to the toxin either through eating baits or
by scavenging the carcasses of poisoned animals. Harmful to aquatic
organisms. Manage bait application rates carefully and comply with any
restrictions imposed on placing baits over or near waterways. Avoid
pollution of any water supply with pellets or used container.

DANGEROUS GOODS

CLASS:

1080 is NOT a natural substance.. it is a synthetic poison, a World Health Organisation Class 1A ecotoxin, banned in most countries. It is extremely dangerous to humans. One standard teaspoon of pure 1080 poison can kill 100 grown men. One 1080 bait (0.15% pure poison) can kill a child.

Over all, the use of poisons appears to be becoming very normalized. Videos like this below certainly illustrate that.

I read an article yesterday by Geoff Booth, a Kiwi and a B.Sc. who worked for a long time in pest eradication using poisons including 1080 & with DoC, so is very knowledgeable in the use of 1080. He said the US manufacturers are dismayed at the way we in NZ use 1080, in a totally opposite way to the labelled recommendations, ie it is ‘chucked around in a veritable lollie scramble in the bush from helicopters’.

Those of us who have lived more than 50 years on the planet know that there was little mention of poison in our childhoods. If you personally think it’s fine for our kids, you need to read Dr Meriel Watts’ book, Poisoning Our Future: Children and Pesticides.

Poisoning Our Future small

“Poisoning Our Future: Children and Pesticides” The book details the scientific evidence for the insidious effects of pesticides on children and calls on government institutions to adopt a more precautionary approach to better protect human health and the environment.

Toxic chemicals such as pesticides pollute our surroundings – from the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe in our homes, farms, communities, at schools and work and even our own bodies. Children are exposed to these pesticides and are very much vulnerable to the negative health effects of these harmful chemicals. Yet, governments and industry overlook these impacts on children’s health despite the availability of safer alternatives to pesticides.

According to Pesticide Action Network Aoteoroa New Zealand author, Dr Meriel Watts, “Children are not little adults. The activities they do make them more prone to accumulate pesticides in their bodies; and their developing bodies make them more prone to the negative effects of toxic chemicals such as pesticides. Yet government regulatory processes and tests do not look into these effects,” according to Dr Meriel Watts, author of the book. Tests used to approve use of pesticides do not look into endocrine disruption which can impact the physical, intellectual and behavioural development of the foetus and young child. The effects can include ADHD and autism and even conditions like obesity and breast cancer that can show up later in life in what is now referred to as the “foetal origins of adult disease”. Some childhood cancers like leukaemia have been linked to the exposure of parents to pesticides. Highly hazardous pesticides also damage the developing immune, nervous and reproductive systems.

Educate yourself on the risks & protect your children. Read them the data safety sheets in a child friendly manner. Discuss the risks & caution them never to touch the 1080 baits.

Finally, remember what the retired MD Charlie Baycroft said recently … ‘if you die from 1080 poisoning, nobody will know  because the Ministry of Health is bullying NZ Doctors into not testing for 1080′.

POSTSCRIPT:

(1) A week after writing this, a Facebook post describes a child in the family announcing “they had someone from DOC come into school and give a big talk about conservation and the need for 1080”. Better to get proactive then parents & have a chat with your child’s school about your preferences around what they learn on the poison topic.

(2) Someone has emailed the Poisons Centre on topic:

Kia ora,

Thank you for your email regarding high school science text books. The National Poison Centre is an emergency service that provides emergency first aid and treatment advice over the phone. We are not involved in legislation, lobbying, or teaching of science in education facilities.

I would recommend continuing to contact the Ministry of Education, or if unsuccessful contacting your local Member of Parliament to liase with Ministry on your behalf.

Good morning,

I am very concerned after viewing a year 10 science text book on an anti poison social media page  The information within the text book is incorrect and highly dangerous, to elude that one of the worlds deadliest poisons, Compound 1080 with no known antidote, ‘is not that poisonous to humans’ is ludicrous and downright evil.

How are children meant to know any different about the dangers of this poison if this is what they are taught at schools in New Zealand!!

This textbook information directly contradicts the manufacturers warning label & manufacturers data sheet:

Deadly poison. Keep out of reach of children
Avoid all waterways.
Deadly to aquatic life.
Will decompose at temperatures over 200 degrees.
Avoid secondary poisoning.
Poisoned carcasses should be burned completely or buried deeply at hazardous waste landfill

Please alert the Ministry of Education to this terrible error! I have already emailed them with no success to have this textbook removed from the curriculum.

I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

This is all very in-house isn’t it? Not unlike how the Police investigate themselves. Or how Monsanto long ago in the 1970s tested Roundup themselves for safety. Also a bit like asking the second hand car dealer to check over the car you are looking to purchase.

Dr Meriel Watts appealed to Environment Waikato (now Waikato Regional Council, WRC) in 2010 to desist from the use of 1080 as they considered the issuing of up to 20 year consents for aerial dispersal of the said product:

“Re: EPRO and EcoFX Resource Consent Applications

Dear Mr Laing,

I am writing to you on behalf of Pesticide Action Network Aotearoa New Zealand to express our profound opposition to Environment Waikato’s anachronistic proposal to allow 10- or 20-year resource consents to EPROand EcoFX to aerially disperse 1080 in the region.

As you are no doubt aware, 1080 is classed by the World Health Organisation as an Extremely Hazardous pesticide (Class 1a WHO). You may not be aware that as such it falls within the category of Highly Hazardous Pesticides for which the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) is seeking a global phase out.

That Environment Waikato is contemplating 10 or 20 year consents to use, let alone aerially disperse, 1080, when a UN agency is promoting a global phase out of all such pesticides is extraordinary. I can only assume that you officers are not aware of the situation.

To issue consents of 10 or more years duration also flies in the face of ERMA’s concern about such on-going widespread dispersal of 1080 in the environment, and their support for more research into alternatives. There will be no room for introduction of alternatives in the EW region if these consents are granted.”

1080 is a broad-spectrum poison: it kills all oxygen-breathing animals and organisms. This alone is reason enough to cease dispersing it into the environment. It indiscriminately kills and contaminates everything from the insects that underpin the native fauna food chain to precious native birds, dogs and farm animals. There are so many recorded instances that there is no need to elaborate on them here. Nor the fact that the suffering of these animals on the way to death is extremely inhumane.

That New Zealand has such a history of poisoning its indigenous species, livestock and companion animals is a shame we have to live with. But we do not need to perpetuate it. Thankfully the era of poisoning everything we don’t like is passing, and intelligent new, targeted approaches to pest management are taking its place.

It is time now for Environment Waikato to move forward with the rest of the world, and introduce alternatives. Trapping has been shown to be an effective method of controlling possums, at the same time utilising a valuable resource for the benefit of the national economy, and trapping technology is continually improving. On the other hand, years of experience of 1080 dispersal has shown that this approach is not sustainable, it has to be repeated at regular intervals, each time with its negative consequences for the environment.

Pesticide Action Network therefore urges you to reject the idea of extended resource consents for aerial dispersal of 1080, and to instead focus your resources on rapid introduction of sustainable, environmentally friendly, and socially supportive alternatives such as trapping.

Yours sincerely,

Meriel Watts, PhD,

Pesticide Action Network

When a PHD & author of 2 well known books* on the effects of poisons on human beings & environments, takes the time to warn those who are mandating widespread poisoning of the environment of the dangers therein, you would think that that authority would heed the warning. But no, not only have they continued dropping 1080, it increases yearly. And the rules have even been changed so that 1080 can be delivered straight into waterways without a consent from council!

Indeed since that time the Government itself has been busy making the product for the country (NZ) that was already using 80% or thereabouts of the world’s supply. Cleverly re branding it to make its image slightly more palatable to the non questioning public.

We are expected to now believe that an investigation into this recent incident involving the death of 8 cows (including aborted calves) by the very organization that is not only a branch of the same tree and pro 1080, will be independent?

They are all under the same Government umbrella!  DoC, Regional Council, Orillion. May as well save themselves the time, money & effort because we can fairly safely bet on what the outcome will be.

TULL Chemical in the US that made 1080 has shut down … where will NZ source 1080 from now? (updated post, Tull still operating)

Please not that Tull as it turns out is actually NOT SHUT down as previously thought. Read about that here: https://envirowatchrangitikei.wordpress.com/2019/04/14/the-controversial-tull-chemical-co-in-alabama-us-suppliers-of-pure-1080-to-nz-is-not-closed-as-claimed/

From Carol Sawyer

TULL CHEMICAL CO, OXFORD, ALABAMA, HAS CLOSED ITS DOORS ! SO…. WHERE WILL WE BE SOURCING OUR PURE 1080 FROM NOW?!!

The seedy little factory in Burton St, Oxford, Alabama – from whence New Zealand sourced its pure 1080 poison for so many years, has finally closed its doors!

Yet we are still, according to the NZ government, importing our pure 1080 from the USA. So, where are we getting it from ?

NO to 1080 Use in NZ reported on 16 August :

“Let’s be absolutely clear about the FACT that 1080 poison is NOT a ‘natural’ substance. This OIA dated last week from the New Zealand Government confirms that the SYNTHETIC poison 1080 is manufactured in the USA and imported into NZ. It is now processed into baits at the two factories: Wanganui and Rolleston.” – see attached.

In 2004, factory owner Charles Wigley said :

“… he makes as much as five tons of the poison annually, with most of it being exported to New Zealand. He said his only U.S. customer is the Department of Agriculture, which said it uses less than four tablespoons of Compound 1080 annually in sheep collars. The collars kill coyotes by poisoning them when they bite an animal’s throat.

The poison collars are used in nine states, but the government said they only kill a couple dozen coyotes annually. It was once used in California, but voters there in 1998 approved a ballot resolution banning the use of Compound 1080 and another poison, sodium cyanide.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/f4103ea0-4390-4c34-8929-…/…

In an article in ‘The Anniston Star’ by Zach Tyler, March 11, 2015, Wigley was reported as saying he thought he was the sole producer of 1080 used in pest control and that “New Zealand is, far and away, my largest customer”.

In another news article at that time, Tull Chemicals’ owner Charles Wigley said that NZ imported 90% of his product, Australia 7%, and Israel 3%. I can’t find the article, bother it, but those figures are embedded in my head ! (The factory was in the NZ news in 2015, because of the infant formula threat).

************************************************************************

SO HAS THE NZ GOVERNMENT TOLD THE TRUTH ?

Are we still importing pure 1080 from the USA ?

Have we simply got a massive stockpile here to use up until it is manufactured in NZ or replaced with another nasty poison ?

Is this the reason that the Rolleston factory, Pest Control Research Ltd, has finally been given consent to manufacture 1080 baits?

Will they be allowed to manufacture pure 1080 poison as well in the future?

Or will the government-owned factory “Animal Control Products’, trading as Orillion, start manufacturing pure 1080 poison again, as they did for some unknown reason from 1998 to 2002?

POSTSCRIPT

We have a postscript from a reader at Facebook:

“The West Coast Regional Council has admitted a secret $500,000 investment in a pest control company and new factory which is looking to manufacture 1080 poison at Rolleston, near Christchurch.
The council released a statement this morning after being outed by the Greymouth Star.
Once the factory is operational, the regional council will be involved in 1080 from manufacturing to consenting and even the application of the poison through another council-owned company.
Company Office records show the Rolleston partnership with Pest Control Research NZ Ltd was formed in May 2013. It has only two shareholders — Christchurch man Malcolm Thomas with 51 per cent, and the West Coast Regional Council with 49 per cent. This story came out in The Herald, October 2014.”

How the NZ Govt’s 1080 pesticide company re branded itself and why

Orillion is the new name for the Govt/corporation owned factory in Whanganui that manufactures 1080, the poison that is distributed liberally over our land in an endeavour to make us pest free. Per annum they drop 4,000 kg, enough to kill 20 million people. This is 22,000 times more than the rest of the world drops in fact it is banned in most countries. No wonder they wanted to re brand it. People are waking up to its toxicity. They’ve been dropping 1080 for 60 years now so it seems to not be working.

TWO SCIENTISTS WHO REVIEWED MORE THAN 100 OF DOC’S SCIENTIFIC PAPERS SAY: “THERE’S NO CREDIBLE SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE SHOWING ANY SPECIES OF NATIVE BIRD BENEFITS FROM 1080 DROPS”

The new target is 2050 by which time we will supposedly be pest free. Supposedly. I suspect by 2050 we’ll be free of a lot more than pests.

WITH A LONG HISTORY OF POISONING KEA, DOC IS SET TO FINISH OFF WHAT REMAINS – DR JO POLLARD

WITH THE ANOMALIES NOTED IN KEA DEATHS, A SERIOUS UPGRADE IN MONITORING IS REQUIRED FOR US TO SEE THAT 1080 IS ACTUALLY DOING WHAT DOC SAYS IT DOES

NZ’S 1080 SUPPLY IS MADE RIGHT HERE IN YOUR OWN BACK YARD – FYI

The old name of this establishment was Animal Control Products. However in 2016 or thereabouts, they enlisted a Massey University owned company in Wellington called Open Lab to re brand it. This does appear to coincide very much with the intensified awareness of the public to the darker side of this poison.

“Animal Control Products NZ develops products to control and eradicate pests. They wanted to reposition their status from being a negatively slanted ‘producer of poisons’ to instead emphasising the great achievements that their products have lead to.

Open Lab was entrusted with re-naming the company and developing a new brand strategy that would be reflected through a revitalised brand story and a modernised design aesthetic.”

You can read about the new slant at the following link:

http://www.openlab.ac.nz/our-work/orillion/

This is in no way a negative slant on Open Lab. They are just working for their dollars. Any design company could have done the task and the point here of course is to highlight the deliberate tactic of prettying up the poisoning program under a plethora of new and colorful rhetoric and images which of course is not new.

“The elected name, Orillion, means ‘the defensive part of a city wall’, and conveys their role as a safeguard of native species, the environment and community. The logo is based on the whauwhaupaku, or fivefinger; a fast-growing plant used to help forests regenerate.”

It is a time worn tactic employed by governments since forever. The Crown is an expert at it. They re wrote our colonial histories in a similar  fashion to make them more palatable for succeeding generations. It is hoped says the website info, that the new branding will increase export sales.

Did you know Company Office records show the Rolleston Partnership with Pest Control Research NZ Ltd was formed in May 2013.

It has only two shareholders- Christchurch man Malcolm Thomas with 51 per cent, and the West Coast Regional Council with 49 per cent.

Did you know ………”In New Zealand, the poison is manufactured into pellets by Animal Control Products Ltd (ACP), a Crown-owned company, which manufactures more than 90 per cent of the pesticides formulations containing 1080 used in New Zealand.”……….

For important details on 1080 that are generally left out of the mainstream dialogue I suggest you visit our 1080 pages at the main menu. There is much evidence there and many links to independent research illustrating that this product kills more than the pests we are told are targeted. If you hike, tramp, hunt or fish, you should also visit the page, Suspected 1080 Poisoning Cases.

BANNED IN MOST COUNTRIES & CLASSIFIED BY WHO AS ‘HIGHLY HAZARDOUS’… 1080 IS A BROAD-SPECTRUM POISON THAT KILLS ALL OXYGEN-BREATHING ANIMALS AND ORGANISMS – DR MERIEL WATTS

Also, use ‘categories’ at the left of the page & search 1080. There are just too many references to include in this short article. Share the information with your loved ones. You should not for instance, be in or near a drop zone if pregnant.

Midwives warn of 1080 risk

More to come on that topic. Finally, watch out for your pets near any drop zone. Death by 1080 has been likened by a Veterinarian to two days of electrocution. Not a pretty sight and there is no antidote.

For those who are against the use of aerially dropped 1080 on our land (and waterways) there is a peaceful protest-hikoi making its way from the far North & the far South, to meet at Parliament on September 8th. Watch for its passage through your town/area & support their efforts in whatever way you can. Details can be found here.

For folk near Whanganui there is to be a peaceful protest there as well. Details below from Hikoi of a Poisoned Nation at Facebook.

In 2017 the NZ Govt effectively excluded the aerial distribution of poison bait, from the protection of the Resource Management Act – still trust them then with your safety?

Through its new rules the New Zealand Government has effectively excluded the spreading of Compound 1080 – a WHO class A1 eco-toxin – from environmental protection legislation, to increase its company profits … TV-Wild

Important information from TV-Wild by the Graf Brothers:

“New Zealand is known for its pure water, mountainous peaks and majestic scenery. Millions of tourists visit every year. They tramp the Great Walks and drink from the mountain streams – a land of milk and honey, 100% Pure! …”

However…

“There is growing concern across New Zealand about the massive use of Compound 1080 poison. Government agencies currently spread 1080 poison bait aerially, across the forests and directly into the waterways – enough poison to kill over 60 million people every year. The poison kills 1000’s of deer, and 100’s of 1000’s of other animals, birds and insects, every year.” (Explore menu at the TV-Wild link for references)

READ MORE ON WATER

“There are three significant government agencies that aerially spread 1080 poison bait across land and water in New Zealand – The Department of ConservationTB Free & OSPRI, and regional councils.

Up until 2017, regional councils issued resource consent certificates to government agencies and contractors that permitted 1080 poison bait to be spread across land and directly into water. However, in 2017, the New Zealand Government changed legislation, and that legislation now permits poison bait to be aerially spread across land and directly into water, without the requirement for a resource consent certificate – effectively excluding the aerial distribution of poison bait, from the protection of the Resource Management Act.

The New Zealand Government owns Orillion, the 1080 poison factory that imports and manufactures 1080 poison, and brodifacoum cereal baits. The factory’s mission statement makes it clear that the company exists for profit.

Through its new rules the New Zealand Government has effectively excluded the spreading of Compound 1080 – a WHO class A1 eco-toxin – from environmental protection legislation, to increase its company profits. “
