Those who suffered as children at a Rangitikei psychiatric hospital (Lake Alice) to share their stories

Firstly remember this? …. Sept 2020
“When I filed my claim, instead of compassion, justice, validation and an apology, I received nine gruelling years of emotional battering, abuse and bullying from the Crown,” she said.

CROWN SET UP SECRET LAKE ALICE MEETING

Ex-Lake Alice chief psychiatrist flew from Australia for secret mediation meeting. David Williams reports

Crown lawyers were instrumental in organising – and hushing up – a meeting to settle a $1.5 million lawsuit which involved the secret return to New Zealand of the former head psychiatrist of a notorious children’s mental hospital.

In the 1970s, Dr Selwyn Leeks ran the Lake Alice child and adolescent unit, near Whanganui. Youngsters, many of them misdiagnosed and sent there wrongly, were routinely punished for minor infractions with electric shocks, without anaesthetic or muscle relaxants. After the practice was exposed, the unit was shut down and Leeks left for Australia.

Lake Alice is one of this country’s darkest chapters of child abuse in state care.

No one has ever been charged with criminal behaviour at Lake Alice, despite uncontested evidence of the abuse and torture of children. Last year, a United Nations committee found successive governments had violated the UN Convention against Torture for not properly investigating dozens of claims and holding anyone to account.

Yesterday, at an Abuse in Care Royal Commission hearing in Auckland, it was revealed Leeks secretly flew back to New Zealand in 1998, with the tacit knowledge and involvement of Crown lawyers, to try and settle a High Court claim by Auckland woman Leonie McInroe and another Lake Alice survivor. McInroe took civil action against the Crown and Leeks in 1994 over abuse at Lake Alice, seeking damages of $1.5 million.

Four years later, as the mediation meeting approached, McInroe was sworn to secrecy. ….

It’s hoped their stories, alongside expert and witness testimony will reveal the full extent of what went on at the child and adolescent unit at Lake Alice Hospital – a rural psychiatric facility in the Manawatu-Whanganui region.

The inquiry, which is part of the investigation into abuse in psychiatric care, offers the first comprehensive investigation into just what went on inside that unit.

Almost fifty years on from their abuse at the hands of the state, some of the “Children of Lake Alice” will be sharing their stories, as part of the Royal Commission Inquiry into Abuse in Care.

NZ activist award to NZ Govt torture program victim

Thank you for exposing this sadistic man and standing up for truth Paul Zentveld. Shame on the NZ government. EWR

nigels award 2

The prestigious Leveling The Playing Field awards, an annual award open for New Zealanders speaking out against human rights, corruption and environmental harm has presented it’s second award for the 2020 season to Paul Zentveld for his work in exposing the Lake Alice torture program.

Paul Zentveld took the complaint to the United Nations Committee on Torture after the NZ government sought to ignore complaints. In fact, the NZ Medical Council assisted the torturer-in-charge to flee New Zealand with a clean record to where he now resides in Melbourne, Dr Selwyn Leeks.

The United Nations have condemned the NZ Government for their failure to take action. The torture involved physical and sexual abuse of an extreme nature including use of ECT, electro-shock to parts of the body including genitals on the children held at the torture facility.

On March 9th Paul was presented with the award in Auckland, a high quality hard-cover copy of the L Ron Hubbard biography edition “Freedom Fighter, Articles and Essays,” an account of Hubbard’s personal letters to US Government and other essays on Justice and more.

On being presented, Paul responded I am honoured to receive this award. I am a trail blazer for the truth and justice, for the first time in Wellington in 2006 and now 2020 at the United Nations. This is to show the world the truth; torturing children is okay by New Zealand government, but not by its citizens. Justice has been served. Thank you to all. How dare they!”

There are a further 22 awards open for this year by Leveling The Playing Field. The organizer, Nigel Gray, stated “The purpose of the award is to provide an incentive and validation to those in our communities around New Zealand who work so hard to expose what is really going on. Moreover this award is for the real people who do their work, unsupported by government or corporate interests but do it because they care for others more than anything else.”

According to the “Leveling the Playing Field” facebook page. the first award for 2020 was to Environmental Lawyer and Co Leader of the Outdoors Party, Sue Grey, for her work in educating New Zealanders about the harm of 5G.

FDA Wants To Make Psychiatric Industry’s Billion Dollar Electroshock Therapy More Widely Available

6th April 2016

“The FDA has initiated a proposal that would reclassify Electroconvulsive Therapy Devices (ECT) from its current category as a high risk device, to a lower risk machine with less regulatory controls. This is despite the federal agency’s admission that the ECT device has not been proven safe and effective.” ~ CCHR Documentaries

The Judge Rotenberg Center (JRC) in Canton, Massachusetts has a long history of controversy for how it handles disabled children and adults. The school has been condemned by the United Nations Special Rapporteurs on Torture, a variety of disability groups, Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick, and an FDA advisory panel.

What is it about the school’s protocol that has attracted such criticism? The answer lies in the way the school handles “unacceptable” behavior — by using frequent electric shocks as punishment. Former teachers at Rotenberg have described how mentally challenged children would writhe on the floor, screaming in pain after receiving the shocks. And yet, the school still has around 200 students, with more referrals in the pipeline. Rotenberg is the only designated school in the United States that uses electric shock for behavioral management.
