Polls show Kiwi opposition to 1080 poison has jumped to 85% since 2001

SURVEYS SHOW THE UNMISTAKABLE TREND!
32% KIWIS OPPOSED TO 1080 POISON IN 2001
85% KIWIS OPPOSED TO 1080 POISON IN 2018

By Carol Sawyer

The opinion polls show what is happening. A ‘Marlborough Express’ poll in September, 2018, showed 85% of nearly 4,000 people want 1080 BANNED.

The comments poll on ‘The Project NZ’ also in September, revealed even higher figures against 1080.. almost 90%.

The protests on September 8th, 2018, nationwide, despite being made up of mainly rural dwellers, had over 5,000 people out in the streets, in 45 townships, towns and cities!

Watch the video!!!

Here is the progression, according to surveys and polls:

In November, 2001, 32% were opposed to aerial 1080 poison.

In 2007, 43% were opposed and 12% were undecided.

In 2009, 43% were opposed and 14% undecided

In June 2016, a DoC survey of 4,200 people showed 61% were opposed to aerial poison.

In September, 2018, 85 % of 3,900 people in a ‘Marlborough Express’ survey wanted 1080 banned.

On October 29, 2017, I wrote :

NEARLY TWO THIRDS OF NEW ZEALANDERS ARE NOT COMFORTABLE ABOUT AERIAL 1080 POISONING !

See page 8 of the 2016 DoC survey below. This was a survey of 4200 people, in June 2016 :

“The spread of poison bait and herbicides via aircraft are methods of pest control that the majority of the public do not feel comfortable using.”

This figure of 61de% of New Zealanders not happy with aerial poisoning is up from 43 % seven years previously. I suspect the figure will be a lot higher now.

Also, 72% of those surveyed do NOT see deer as a major conservation threat !

It makes the current spate of attacks on the credibility of anti-1080 people by DoC staff, and Director-General of Conservation Lou Sanson, more understandable. Opposition to their massive 1080 poisoning programme is becoming a very big worry for the authorities

Here is the relevant section from a Royal Society Journal with regard to figures in 2009, (43% opposed, 14% undecided).

That document’s link is below the excerpt, and is well worth a look. It is called “Opposition to aerial 1080 poisoning for control of invasive mammals in New Zealand: risk perceptions and agency responses”!!!

“Public concerns over risks and agency messages”

Within the last decade public opposition to the use of 1080 has risen. A national survey in November 2001 (UMR 2001 UMR 2001 . Omnibus results: favourability rating and support for 1080 use (November 2001) . UMR Research Limited , Auckland , , New Zealand . [Google Scholar]) found that 52% of the general public supported 1080 use while 32% were opposed. A UMR Omnibus survey in 2007 asked the question ‘Do you support or oppose the use of 1080 poison to control the impact of possums on native forests and birds, and to control the spread of tuberculosis?’ Only 45% of respondents supported use and 43% opposed, with 12% undecided (Harry Broad, pers. comm. 2009). When asked this question in April 2009, after the ERMA hearings, 43% supported its use, 43% opposed, and 14% were undecided (Harry Broad, pers. comm. 2009). Māori were much less supportive than non-Māori. Although the applicants had hoped that presenting new information on 1080 would reduce public concerns, the extensive ERMA re-assessment process had not done so. Public opinion on any given topic can be influenced by many factors, but ERMA had identified that users of 1080 were partly responsible due to poor communication and consultation practices.”

“WILLIE NELSON TAKES US BACK TO THE START” – Video by The Graf Boys

Here are 2 NZ Mayors who would like to see alternatives to 1080

Good to hear from prominent people in the community who are concerned about the extensive use of poisons in our environment posing potential risks to our health. Here, just prior to the pro-clean-water anti-1080 hikoi in September, Emile Leaf was welcomed informally on the road (6th Sept) by Horowhenua’s Mayor Michael Feyen. He expressed his personal preference for alternatives to 1080 being used. There is another also in this camp, the Mayor of Queenstown … we posted an article on that  a month or so back.

It would be a good idea to contact the Mayor & Councilors of your own particular region & see if any others are pro alternatives.

Header Photo: please advise if this is your excellent image & would like credit or would like it removed. Thank you.

The growing momentum of the anti-1080 movement

Carol Sawyer recently posted on the growth stats of the Facebook groups opposed to the use of 1080 in NZ. All this, as the hikoi moves from the North & South of the country. Watch as they approach your area and support as you are able. See details below.

The South Island Hikoi, moving North to Parliament

“Huge momentum has been gained in the anti-1080 movement over the last couple of months and I am finding it hard to keep up with emails and messages and responses to comments. There are only so many hours in a day.

I will get to most messages and emails eventually.

Example of growth :

The ‘Ban 1080 Party’ page now stands at 11,759 followers, (up from 10,616 in April this year).
‘No to 1080 Use in NZ’ now stands at 27,628 followers. (In the last 28 days the page reached 196.6 thousand people. From July 25 to July 31, followers increased by 571)
‘1080 Eyewitness’ now stands at 19,716 members (up 1000 members in the last few days!).
OPERATION BAN 1080 now stands at 36,534 members ! (It is the fastest growing group and has only been up and running for just over two weeks).

Please respect other road users. This is a PEACEFUL PUBLIC PROTEST to STOP the use of DEADLY POISONS in New Zealand.

The peaceful hikoi against 1080 is met with a 40-50 strong Police presence & a lawyer giving legal advice says she was assaulted

“A large group of anti-1080 protesters were partaking in a hikoi to Parliament when they were met with an “enormous police presence”, according to lawyer Sue Grey who was among those protesting.”

Sue said she was later assaulted whilst giving legal advice to arrestees.

“Ms Grey estimated there were between 40 and 50 police officers blocking the road from Onepoto Domain as the group were preparing to cross the Harbour Bridge.

“The whole thing just turned ugly in moments from the police conduct,” she said. “It was just unbelievable; it was like walking into a nightmare. They were extremely firm and in some cases physically assaulting people. It was a very frightening scene that I’ve never come across before.” ”  newshub.co.nz

Remember folk, your government (that is how a corporation & owns the factory that produces 1080) has allowed the rules to be changed to allow the dropping of 1080 into your waterways. I mention corporation because a corporation* cannot & does not  place the interests of you the people above those of the corporation.

“Up until 2017, regional councils issued resource consent certificates to government agencies and contractors that permitted 1080 poison bait to be spread across land and directly into water. However, in 2017, the New Zealand Government changed legislation, and that legislation now permits poison bait to be aerially spread across land and directly into water, without the requirement for a resource consent certificate – effectively excluding the aerial distribution of poison bait, from the protection of the Resource Management Act.”

It was landing there anyway prior to this change (see here also), however it has now been made legal.

This should be concerning you.

The people on the hikoi have noted this change of tack & are saying in effect, ‘enough is enough’. We do not want our whenua, our land and our water, poisoned with impunity. Listen below here to more of that detail around why.

For further articles here on 1080, go to ‘categories’ (left of news page). Also, visit the 1080 pages for links to other independent info. In particular, see the page titled, ‘Suspected 1080 Poisoning Cases’. There is documented there the history of the Putaruru family who fell ill recently & the ensuing cover up on suspected 1080 poisoning following their hospitalization after consumption of wild pork. See also the case of the young hiker in the South Island who died & whose Doctor suspected 1080 poisoning. Her heart sent for testing, was lost by the authorities! Another cover up.

For on-the-ground coverage, see the many social media groups providing day by day updates, particularly the Hikoi of a Poisoned Nation, Operation Ban 1080, 1080 Eyewitness and No to 1080 Use in NZ groups on Facebook. There is a complete list of the many groups, resources, sites etc relating to 1080 at this link. Note: you will read the independent info & research at these links. It is somewhat different to the official mantra of the alleged safety of 1080 poison.

Published on Dec 3, 2013

This New Zealand film has won 4 international environmental awards – but here in NZ, TV channels refuse to play it. Why? Because if they did, there would be outrage and riots over New Zealand’s use of aerially applied 1080 poison. See for yourself …

*THE CORPORATION is a Canadian documentary film written by Joel Bakan, and directed by Mark Achbar and Jennifer Abbott. The documentary examines the modern-day corporation, considering its legal status as a class of person and evaluating its behavior towards society and the world at large as a psychiatrist might evaluate an ordinary person. This is explored through specific examples. Bakan wrote the book, The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, during the filming of the documentary. Hikoi of a Poisoned Nation UPDATE…

The Hikoi will continue as planned on Saturday 21st leaving The Strand Takapuna at 9am and following the previously arranged route to Onepoto Domain and onto the Harbour Bridge at 12noon.

Our application to NZTA for a supported bridge crossing has been declined. NZTA themselves have been supportive and helpful through this process but say it is too short notice to make arrangements. Emiles earlier communications to authorities were redirected, referred and ignored which has left us at the 11th hour.

NZTA have said they will be prepared and ready to manage an ‘unplanned event’ if that occurs. Please be aware that crossing the bridge on foot may incur a fine of $100. We are told that the police have no power to make arrests. Many of us feel strongly enough to walk regardless and believe the processing of our numbers by the authorities would be impractical.

We welcome your support on Saturday any way it comes. Please join the hikoi where you feel comfortable. You may choose to make the harbour crossing on foot in the hikoi tradition, by vehicle, waka….

Emile is walking under his sovereign native rights and anyone walking him with him will be under korowai manaaki under that context. Which basically means we are as one person.

Sat. 30th June

Comment on FB from a supporter Royden Dick:

I was Blessed to get the opportunity to walk with the peaceful protesters on their Hikoi of a Poisoned Nation for the first 3 days from bluff.
We met some truly awesome, soulful, down to earth people along the way.
I am overwhelmed with the support these guys are receiving from the public on their journey whether it be Honks, toots, yeeha’s and woohoo’s from motorists to people stopping and giving koha’s of food and money to help these guys on their journey.

There was still the odd bird flicked our way and a dude pretending to shake the crap out of an imaginary can of coke and to these folks I say sorry to you for having such a sad and crappy day as you seem to be very angry and upset, I hope your day gets better for you.
Going off the support received so far the angry upset kiwi’s having a crappy day are the extreme minority, Seems as though everyone else is happy as.

NZ YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!!!

I ask anyone and everyone who gets the opportunity to meet and join these guys on their travels to parliament to do so. Whether it be for 5 days or 5 minutes to make a stand against 1080 and all aerial poisons in Aotearoa. They are not walking for their own agendas and interests but for YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN.

I look forward to walking again as soon as possible.
Thanks again guys and Kia Kaha.

NELSON MAIL REPORTS:

Planned Hikoi to Parliament from far North & far South in peaceful protest at NZ’s use of 1080 – begins 14th June

There are three significant government agencies that aerially spread 1080 poison bait across land and water in New Zealand – The Department of ConservationTB Free & OSPRI, and regional councils

Up until 2017, regional councils issued resource consent certificates to government agencies and contractors that permitted 1080 poison bait to be spread across land and directly into water. However, in 2017, the New Zealand Government changed legislation, and that legislation now permits poison bait to be aerially spread across land and directly into water, without the requirement for a resource consent certificate – effectively excluding the aerial distribution of poison bait, from the protection of the Resource Management Act.

The New Zealand Government owns Orillion, the 1080 poison factory that imports and manufactures 1080 poison, and brodifacoum cereal baits. The factory’s mission statement makes it clear that the company exists for profit. Through its new rules the New Zealand Government has effectively excluded the spreading of Compound 1080 – a WHO class A1 eco-toxin – from environmental protection legislation, to increase its company profits.

To achieve greater profits, if a government changes legislation for an activity equivalent to an act of terrorism (dropping an eco-toxin with no antidote directly into water supplies and forests which are sources of wild foods) – does that relaxed law make that activity no longer equal to an act of terrorism?

Alan Gurden and Emille Leaf, co-founders of Hikoi of a Poisoned Nation, believe that the New Zealand Government, and its poisoning agencies are indeed committing an act of terror by aerially spreading 1080 poison bait across New Zealand forests and waterways.

So the team are calling for all New Zealanders to join their peaceful hikoi. The pair will walk from each end of the country, starting with Alan at Bluff in the south, and Emille at Cape Reinga in the north, converging in Wellington. Alan will begin his march on the 15th of June, and Emille will begin his march on the 14th of June, 2018. The pair, with their supporters, will converge at Parliament, in Wellington, where the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has agreed to meet them.

The men believe thousands of people will join the march by the time they reach Parliament.

Please see the link for further details on how you can help &/or take part:
