The well known carcinogen chlorine found in swimming pools is also in your drinking water and some of the foods you eat

From Dr Mercola

Toxic Byproducts Created by Adding Chlorine to Water, Food

Most people know there’s chlorine in a swimming pool because you can usually smell it, but this very well-known carcinogen is also in your drinking water and some of the foods you eat.

In the U.S., chlorine is used as a method of disinfecting drinking water, but new research shows this process creates toxic byproducts, according to Futurity.

While chlorine has been used worldwide to save people’s lives from diseases such as typhoid and cholera, questions are being raised about the amount of chlorine that is being used to disinfect drinking water, according to the report.

Phenols, chemical compounds that occur naturally in the environment and are abundant in personal care products and pharmaceuticals, are commonly found in drinking water and when those phenols mix with chlorine, the process creates a large number of byproducts.

Alternative methods that can be used to disinfect drinking water include UV treatment, the use of ozone and simple filtration.

Highly toxic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) form from reactions between pool disinfectants like chlorine and organic matter, including hair, skin, sweat, dirt and … urine. Don’t wrinkle your nose in disgust too fast — 1 in 5  Americans admit they have peed in a pool and, among Olympic swimmers, one former U.S. National team member said nearly 100% of competitive swimmers pee in the pool regularly.

It’s not the urine that is the problem since urine is virtually sterile when it leaves your body, so it doesn’t pose the risk of causing illness the way fecal matter in a pool does. It’s what happens when urine mixes with pool chemicals, including chlorine, that is causing concern.

Studies show that urination in a chlorinated pool creates cyanogen chloride (CNCl), which is classified as a chemical warfare agent, and trichloramine (NCl3), which have been linked to cancer and lung damage.

Chlorine is lurking in some places you’d never suspect, including those cute little cocktail or “baby” carrots you buy at the supermarket.

More important info on Milford’s post-aerial 1080 drop water

WHAT’S IN THE WATER? MILFORD SOUND, FIORDLAND

NOTE: The NZ authorities do not practice the precautionary principle with the spreading of 1080 poison. In fact they are now legally allowed to drop it into your waterways without the previously required consents, even though the manufacturer’s warning says take care not to drop it into the waterways. Whilst they continue to claim it is harmless, there is much independent research that says otherwise. (See 1080science for further independent info). In light of that, in my opinion it is safer to follow the precautionary principle, that is, proceed as if there were a possible risk to your health rather than assume there is none. Since 1080 is a known teratogen I believe it is particularly important for pregnant mothers or even those who think they may be or who could be pregnant, to distance themselves from an area where 1080 is being distributed, particularly aerially because of the drift of the dust over long distances.  I believe these are the concerns being raised here, and particularly also with regard to warning tourists of the risks of drinking the water, who may not be able to read the signs (if there indeed are any). Finally, of particular concern is the topography of Milford Sound. When it rains at Milford Sound, “all of the steep landscape can be considered a streambed”.  EWR.

By Carol Sawyer

Bowen Falls, Milford Sound….. the water intake for supplying Milford Sound township, and all tourist boats and accommodation, is approx. 200m upstream of the Bowen Falls and approx. 100m below the 1080 poison bait drop zone, where 1080 poison baits were aerially dropped on 15 October, 2019.

See smallest map attached. The person who provided that map says:

“Blue (circle) is rough location of intake. Red is a big pipe running from intake into the hydro electric station. It creates the power. Also here is where the only filter for our drinking water is…it’s a UV filter. Then it is distributed to vessels and accommodations. Our drinking water is straight from the Bowen River valley. I have walked up the pipeline before… quite steep in places.”

The significance of all of this is that the aerial 1080 drop could possibly have contaminated the water supply. As well as that, poisoned carcasses will, as we know from experience in all aerial 1080 drops, end up in that waterway as well, also then being a source of contamination.

DoC are not warning tourists of any risk of 1080 in Milford’s drinking water … & they don’t want you to either

DEPT OF CONSERVATION TELLS TOURISM COMPANY OFF – Skippers are not to warn tourists about the dangers of drinking the water after aerial 1080 drop in Milford Sound area yesterday.

Milford Sound (Arthur, Sinbad and Cleddau Valleys) was aerially poisoned on 15 October, 2019.

Pam Vernon reports (15 October, 2019) “A reader at the Envirowatch Rangitikei site today commented about warning the tourists on the dangers of drinking the water: “Hi there my brother works as a skipper for one of the biggest tourism companys in Milford and one of the skippers warned the customers on the mic and a doc member was on the boat and got seriously offended called her boss then doc warned the company gave them a chewing. The company forced all skippers to say nothing at all or risk consequences. The company is afraid of the bad side of doc because that’s who gives them there consent to cruise in Milford. Blackmail against freedom of speech. This is real as of the other day.”

Another person said, (14 October, 2019, 1080 Eyewitness):

“DOC poisoning operation in Milford tomorrow
Who the hell gives DOC the right to poison our only water supply, the Bowen Falls?
650,000 tourists come here every year to view this pristine environment, if only they knew….. “

I’m told the Bowen Falls are in the drop zone, and the whole township at Milford Sound and all the tourist boats are supplied by water from that source.

OIA responses from Southern DHB and DoC state there is a buffer zone round the Milford water intake which they regard as sufficient. See attached, (plus maps from original notification of the drop).

The Milford Sound water intake is approximately 200m above the Bowen Falls, and I’m told the intake is only about 100m inside the top end of the buffer zone (yellow area on map). Helicopters were seen working along that face. Helicopter pilots tell me 250m is a minimum buffer zone for safety, and more if on a slope, as baits tumble into valleys. Poisoned carcasses will inevitably end up in that waterway, as well, providing further contamination.

****************************************************

Here is Milford Sound skipper, Sacha Stevenson, on the issue:

https://envirowatchrangitikei.wordpress.com/…/comment-pag…/…

He says:

“The Bowen River catchment valley is rather like a giant granite bath, with very little top soil, and average rainfall of 7000mm per annum. Together with winter temperatures, ice and snow melt, this will likely increase the risk of 1080 arriving at the intake at the same time and breaking down much more slowly.”

and of the 2017 drop at Milford Sound he says:

“The water quality testing (pg 6 of DOC’s operational report 5.2.2) revealed the presence of 1080 at 1ppb.”

*****************************************************

Put it this way… I wouldn’t be drinking that water !

According to Leslie McGrath, the Dept of Conservation will not take water tankers in to supply safe water because it is “too expensive” ! However the Department’s response to a request for alternative water supply is at the bottom of page 3 in their OIA response attached.

A typical NZ environmentalist (seen by your authorities as a ‘terrorist’) who would like non 1080 laced drinking water

If you are new to the 1080 poisoning program, here is a good article to start with …

WHY ARE PEOPLE SO CONCERNED ABOUT 1080?

A must watch also is Poisoning Paradise, the doco made by the GrafBoys (banned from screening on NZ TV, yet a 4x international award winner). Their website is tv-wild.com. Their doco is a very comprehensive overview with the independent science to illustrate the question marks that remain over the use of this poison. There are links also on our 1080 resources page to most of the groups, pages, sites etc that will provide you with further information.

And the 1080 pages at the main menu, particularly the sub tab, ‘suspected 1080 poisoning cases’. Finally, remember what the retired MD Charlie Baycroft said recently …‘if you die from 1080 poisoning, nobody will know  because the Ministry of Health is bullying NZ Doctors into not testing for 1080′.

A dog was euthanized in 2018 after suspected 1080 poisoning in Ak’s Hunua Ranges … learn however what mainstream ISN’T telling you about the Hunua aerial 1080 drops

There is no effective antidote for 1080 poisoning in humans. A retired NZ MD Charles Baycroft has kindly & bravely told us that 1080 poisoning won’t be found because MDs are not allowed to look for it. Neither are you allowed to do an epidemiological study into its effects on humans. So if you die of it the good Doctor said, nobody will know.  EWR

Midstream of an article further down here about a Labrador pet poisoned in the Hunua Ranges are the related links to the topic of 1080. ‘Council approves’ … ‘Kiwi repopulate’ and ‘bid to stop’ 1080 drop. The Kiwi repopulate one is pretty strategic or yes, could be random. Putting the positive shine on a sad topic however it ‘justifies’ the drops in the mind of you the reader. Since your government does not exercise the precautionary principle with 1080, you may like to familiarize yourself with the many things you aren’t being told by your ‘protection’ authorities or mainstream media, contained in the following six articles:

1) A HUNUA RANGES 1080 DROP IN 1994 LEFT AUCKLAND’S WATER TREATMENT FILTERS PACKED WITH POISON PELLETS

hunua-5
Hunua Ranges is the catchment area for Auckland city’s water supply

With the Hunua Ranges 1080 drop about to happen following a brief foray in court to stop it, where the judge deemed it should go ahead anyway in spite of 19 Doctors writing to the government cautioning about health risks. Not to mention DoC’s lawyers asking that their scientist not be cross examined… how dodgy is that? They just plow on regardless & ignore the voice of the people. Getting very fascist isn’t it?

2) DOC’S LAWYERS ASK THE JUDGE THAT THEIR SCIENTIST NOT BE QUESTIONED IN THE HUNUA RANGES 1080 DROP CASE

1. Copy of hammer-719066_1280Remember this post on social media? September just gone? QUOTE:

“I was there last week
Doc wouldn’t let our lawyer cross examine their scientists and court allowed that. Lawyer won hands down against doc
They couldn’t prove 1080 safety…..TOTAL CORRUPTION
Our lawyer proved by DoC’s own files they were lying …but we LOST”

NOTE: SINCE THIS POSTED, I’VE HEARD THE DROP IS NOT GOING AHEAD AT THIS STAGE. STILL IN COURT…. (PS 19/1/2019 … it DID of course go ahead).

Why do they not want their scientist cross examined? Couldn’t stand the heat? Don’t have the back up science for their data? Could be anybody’s guess but certainly not rocket science. Whatever side of the fence you sit on the 1080 issue, this is about justice of which there appears to be very little these days, remembering Graeme Sturgeon for instance & his ‘win’ that left him with $23K court costs. Looking from afar here we are being sent a very clear message which I’m sure you can figure out for yourselves.

3) IN SPITE OF A SIGNED LETTER TO GOVT BY 19 NZ DOCTORS CONCERNED ABOUT 1080 HEALTH RISKS, THE HUNUA RANGES DROP IS GOING AHEAD!
Note: remember people, this has been in court (big thanks to Sue Grey, lawyer) and DoC’s lawyers asked the judge for their scientist to NOT be cross examined. How dodgy is that? And the drop is going ahead. No surprizes there. See the Court approval here.

IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE*

THE INCREDIBLE LETTER BELOW HAS BEEN PREPARED BY DOCTORS WHO ARE CONCERNED ABOUT 1080 POISON BEING DEPOSITED IN DRINKING WATER

Open letter to the Government, Friday, 21st September 2018.

As doctors, we are extremely concerned about the health risk of depositing poisoned bait over 22,500 hectares of the Hunua water catchment area. Specifically, we are concerned about Sodium Fluoroacetate (SMFA / 1080), a known deadly poison which is known to cause sub-lethal effects on reproduction and is classified as a teratogen, having potential to contaminate the Auckland water supply.

4) 1080 WAS ADDED TO WATER SUPPLIES BY GERMANY IN WW2 AS A CHEMICAL WEAPON SAYS A US MANUFACTURER – & THE NZ AUTHORITIES ARE DROPPING IT AERIALLY INTO NZ’S WATERWAYS

This statement is made within correspondence in 1994 by an Eltham resident (NZ) to a US manufacturer of 1080 (details supplied in the document at the end of the article). The person was trying to ascertain the level of risk to environment and health regarding an imminent drop of 1080 poison into a Taranaki National Park.

It is interesting to note that the replies to all the risks the person raises in their questions are risks that are now deemed quite safe & have become normalized (to the authorities at least that is – many people are now very concerned, witness the recent hikoi & continual NZ wide protests going on).

Here are the questions and answers enlarged for reading:

5) 1080 POISON DROPPED DIRECTLY INTO AUCKLAND’S WATERWAYS IN 2015 – WITH REGIONAL COUNCIL’S CONSENT

The Auckland Council stated in its pacifying document that it used “highly accurate GPS application technology to apply bait”.
The truth is that GPS technology was used to ensure every stream and watercourse within the drop boundaries were spread with 1080 poison.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service set conditions “to protect human health”, and also helped with the “drinking water monitoring plan”, stated Auckland Council in a project document. However, it’s sobering to note that in 2008 the Ministry of Health stated “To date there are no known epidemiological studies that have been carried out in relation to 1080 and potential adverse health effects on humans.” It’s now 2016, and still no studies on chronic impacts have been done, but the areas the poison is being dropped into our environment continues to increase ….

6) IN NZ 1080 CAN NOW BE DROPPED INTO ANY SIZED WATERWAY: THE MANUFACTURER’S WARNING SAYS NOT TO DROP IT INTO WATERWAYS
So NZ seems to be able to just bypass the manufacturer’s instructions. And we the public are supposed to just ignore these guidelines too & trust that all’s good? Where is the scientific data that says it’s now safe? The years long scientific testing of 1080 in water? I haven’t seen any. And what other regulations are they bypassing? …

BELOW IS THE STUFF ARTICLE ABOUT THE POISONED LABRADOR FOLLOWING THE DROP IN THE SAID HUNUA RANGES:

From stuff.co.nz

A much-loved pet dog has died from suspected 1080 poisoning after a walk through Auckland’s Hunua Ranges.

Essi the chocolate labrador began vomiting a “bright-green substance” during the drive home from the regional park on Saturday evening.

Cara Popping said her family pet then started convulsing uncontrollably at the after-hours vet, before the decision was made to have her euthanised.

While it’s unconfirmed exactly what caused the apparent poisoning, 1080 was considered a likely option.

The 23,000 hectare parklands had just reopened that day after being closed for an aerial drop of 1080, or sodium fluoroacetate, in bait form as part an extensive pest eradication scheme.

Auckland Council’s operation lead Rachel Kelleher said although a rigorous track clearance programme was completed, and warning signs erected, “it is possible that dogs could come into contact with baits and carcasses if not closely supervised”.

Cara’s father said he did not note any warning signs driving in to the suspension bridge track parking lot, and didn’t keep her on a lead.

“She was in my sight all the time, but she was deviating one to two metres from the path.

“When we got home we saw that she had been vomiting a very bright-green substance with small dark blue granules.”

On the way to the Manukau After Hours Veterinary Clinic, she had a convulsion. She was given sedative, but it wasn’t enough to stop the fits.

The veterinary clinic’s practice manager, Jedda Ford said it appeared she had ingested a very large dose of poison, but couldn’t be sure if it was slug bait or 1080 – a sample had been collected for testing.

“The vet said there was a 5-10 per cent chance she would live and almost a 100 per cent chance she would have brain damage,” he said.

Essi was put to sleep on humane grounds.

Cara Popping said the family was beyond devastated.

“Everyone was her best friend; She was the most beautiful dog in the world,” her father said.

But the family weren’t interested in placing blame, or joining sides in the 1080 debate – they simply wanted to warn other dog owners to exercise caution around the Hunua Ranges.

“We’d hate for another family to got through the same heartbreak as we have,” Popping said.

The official Auckland Council advice is to keep dogs on a leash around in drop areas – and keep dogs well fed and hydrated.

More information on dogs and 1080 could be found at the Auckland Council website.

1080 IN WATER – AN EXPLANATION

By Carol Sawyer

“Safe as a cup of tea…salt and vinegar chips…..disappears….dissolves…etc.”

These are the words of pro-1080 spin by those with vested interests or those whose money depends on their bureaucratic jobs, and all are unscientific lies.

The better words to think of are “soluble, solute, solvent, and solution.” A universal solvent is water, and if 1080 toxin is the solute, the number of parts per million or trillion the toxin will be diluted to will depend on a number of factors.

For example:

A bait lying in a pond of water in the bush will be a significant solute in a small body of solvent and the solution would be highly toxic.

A bait resting in a fast flowing bouldery river bed will be leaching its toxin but the solute does not disappear. The atom and molecules remain.

Temperature is the other factor (other than the solute/solvent equation) that is considered. We do know with 1080 that micro-organisms can break down 1080 over time, but only in higher temperatures and with high dilution.

In the meantime even 1080 toxin in parts per trillion can affect reproductive and mitochondrial health. 1080 is a synthetic poison that is a teratogen (i.e. an agent or factor which causes malformation of an embryo). It is also deceptively colourless and odourless. 1080 anywhere near water especially
where there are colder temperatures, (most of NZ) or not enough water (the solvent) to adequately dilute the toxin, (the solute) is simply dangerous.

(This was written and sent to me by a Facebook friend who is a high school teacher. I think it sums it up well).

NINETEEN Doctors. If nothing else gets your interest about 1080 poison that certainly should.

These medical professionals who are against excessive use of poisons in our environment are neither violent, extreme activists nor conspiracy theorists as DoC and the media would have you believe. To confirm this you simply must read the independent information. To begin with at least, here is a list of 19 Doctors … why would they spend their valuable time warning both yourself & the authorities about the perceived  dangers of 1080 in your water supply if there wasn’t any?

In efforts to prevent the last Hunua Ranges drop this was taken to court by Sue Grey, lawyer where it was noted that DoC’s lawyers asked the judge that their scientist NOT be cross examined. The lawyers were granted their request & the drop went ahead. See the Court approval here.

BELOW IS THE LETTER PREPARED BY DOCTORS WHO WERE CONCERNED ABOUT 1080 POISON BEING DEPOSITED IN DRINKING WATER

There is no effective antidote for 1080 poisoning in humans.

We are extremely concerned that public officials are not adopting a far more precautionary approach to the safety of the Auckland water catchment, especially when the effects of 1080, a highly soluble poison, is not quantifiably able to be tested on how it affects the health of humans.

Studies show that 1080 affects the reproductive organs, the cardiac system, and respiratory system in mammals. There is no safe minimal level known and water testing and sampling after aerial 1080 application cannot prudently protect the public from risk of exposure from this poison.

As doctors, we are responsible for the health of individuals and communities. Therefore, we ask the government to immediately stop the usage of sodium fluoroacetate which has potential to contaminate the New Zealand water supply.

In 2016 a former DOC ranger expressed concerned with 1080 getting into Taranaki’s waterways

Note: Taranaki is soon to be re 1080’d (2019). See details below the Stuff article on that.
I am noticing in discussions around aerial 1080 drops, folk are saying they’ve not heard of any health effects happening. What you need to know however, is when it comes to testing for 1080 there are parameters around time frames for that (as you will see in the Putaruru family’s ordeal in the links below). A retired NZ Medical Doctor has been concerned enough to inform the public that Doctors are bullied into NOT testing for 1080 poisoning. So in his words last September  2018 “if you die from 1080 poisoning, nobody will know [that it was 1080] …”. You should also read our page on suspected 1080 poisonings to see the foot dragging & cover up that is exhibited by our esteemed authorities.

From stuff.co.nz

A former DOC ranger says he’s concerned about 1080 reaching Taranaki’s water supply following aerial drops of the toxin in Egmont National Park.

Barry Ovenden, who has helped conduct 1080 operations in the park in 2002 and 2010, said there had been a lack of public consultation about the poison reaching rivers which run off the mountain and supply the region with fresh water.

“If the drop goes perfectly then there shouldn’t be any problem, the risk is if someone say drops a bucket of it into a stream,” he said.

“By the time DOC have tested that water 24 hours later, the water is already on the way to the tap.”

Ovenden said there hasn’t been a history of negative effects – like sickness – from people drinking 1080 contaminated water in Taranaki, but cautioned the effects were still relatively unknown.

“DOC test the water supply after the first significant rainfall after the drops, but there’s no long term testing,” he said.

Unlike many stalwart anti-1080 campaigners Ovenden said 1080 was still very effective, but there were other means of controlling pests in the park.

“DOC could conduct that aerial operation on the ground,” he said.

“Sure it would be more expensive, but it wouldn’t be dangerous.

“They (DOC) are dictating to the public of Taranaki that this is the only way.”

However, DOC refutes any claims 1080 poses a danger to our water supply and the government’s environmental watchdog Landcare Research backs up the department’s claims.

According to Landcare’s protocol for sampling and testing water for 1080 there is no evidence water had been contaminated in a study of 76 samples done in 2007.

The report also states that contamination in waterways from 1080 is “highly improbable if current safety procedures are followed”.

The Ministry of Health recommends that water should not be used for drinking if 1080 is found to be above two parts per billion, whereas 70 of the 76 samples done by Landcare were below one part per billion.

DOC spokesperson Herb Christophers said the department simply wouldn’t use 1080 if it was contaminating people’s waterways.

“We base everything we do on the science that supports 1080’s use,” he said.

“There is just no evidence to say it poisons our waterways.”

As for conducting the 1080 operation on the ground, in a more targeted approach to pest control, DOC’s bio-diversity planner Bill Fleury has previously said it would cost 25 times the cost of using 1080 to control pests manually in the park.

Fleury said possums had a small territory and trappers would have to physically trap every hectare in the park to have the same effect as dropping 1080.

“The problem with doing that from the ground is that pests can move back into an area you’ve just baited and nullify any progress you’ve just made,” he said.

1080 is dropped in the the park every six years and this year’s drop is yet to commence as DOC need several fine weather days.

Following this year’s drop DOC will drop 1080 every three years, but at half the dosage.

DETAILS ON THE TARANAKI 1080 AERIAL DROP

EMAIL supplied, dated 18 Feb 2019 from New Plymouth DoC

Hi xxxx

Thank you for your email below. Information regarding Mt Taranaki can be found here – http://taranakimounga.nz/restoration/our-predators/2019-predator-control-operation/.

You’ll note in here that a time period of March-August 2019 is identified. The job is different to 2016, with Kaitake being separate as contributing to a joint project with TRC – Towards a Predator Free Taranaki project. This Kaitake project is intended to start earlier in March (hence the reference to that in the link), with the main cone being later in 2019. This Kaitake timeframe may be what you are hearing, or timings may have changed since the last communication with your friends in November 2018.

Letters are to be sent shortly to more of the community which will include more detail around each part of the job.

Thanks

Sean

If you are new to the 1080 poisoning program here is a good article to start with …

There are links also on our 1080 resources page to most of the groups, pages, sites etc that will provide you with further information to make your own informed decision on this matter.

If you are pro poisoning of the environment, EnvirowatchRangitikei is not the place to espouse your opinions. Mainstream would be the place to air those. This is a venue for sharing the independent science you won’t of course find there.

DOCTORS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT 1080 POISON BEING DEPOSITED IN DRINKING WATER

Signed,

Dr Ulrich Doering MBChB, Dipl O+G, FRNZCGP

Dr Roger Leitch MBChB, FRNZCGP

Dr Mogens Poppe FRNZCGP FRACGP

Dr Caroline Wheeler MBChB, BSc, Dip O+G

“Public should not have been excluded”: more on the Council front, this time Napier

Familiar story isn’t it? Public excluded. Causing ongoing controversy everywhere. What 14484651_1472593802754892_3596900895775183479_n.jpgare they hiding? Oh, that’s right. Sensitive information. Sure. It’s not rocket science is it with everything else that they’re making headlines for these days? Especially recent revelations on the developers’ & fire sale prices in the Horowhenua.  Anyway, this one is on the topic of a Councilor’s personal safety & water.  That clean green stuff we’re known for internationally, right? That’s found in possibly just 40% of our rivers now. Oh well, business is good, and that’s the main thing isn’t it? On the safety topic, that’s a growing issue too as some Horowhenua folk found out when they decided in 2016 to highlight Council’s role in polluting the local waterways. Same happened to a Councilor for doing the same in 2004. Interesting times people.

The public should not have been excluded from a council meeting in which a city’s drinking water supply was discussed, the Ombudsman’s office has found.

Napier City Council excluded the public from attending all items of its Audit and Risk Committee meeting on December 7 last year. The major item on the agenda was titled ‘Update on Water Supply – Drinking Water Quality Improvements’.

The meeting was held just three days after the council told ratepayers they needed to urgently cut down on water use as water levels were about to run out, and just weeks after Stuff had revealed that the council was failing to meet national Drinking Water Standards that had been in place since 2008.
