Sugar Coated — A Doco on How the Sugar Industry Managed to Dupe the World for Decades

Story at-a-glance

  • Thousands of studies spanning many decades show excess sugar damages your health, yet the sugar industry successfully buried the evidence and misdirected the public with manipulated science
  • “Sugar Coated” investigates the sugar industry’s once secret PR campaign, showing it normalized excessive consumption by deflecting evidence implicating sugar as a cause of ill health
  • The manufactured uncertainty and lack of scientific consensus is what has allowed the sugar industry to thrive while health statistics have tanked
  • A 2016 paper examined the links between funding and study outcomes. Of the 60 studies, the 26 that found no link between sugary drinks and obesity or diabetes were all funded by the beverage industry; of the 34 that did find a relationship, only one had received industry funding
  • Seventy-four percent of packaged foods contain added sugars, which hide under 61 different names, many of which are unfamiliar

By Dr. Mercola

Thousands of studies spanning many decades show excess sugar damages your health,1 yet the sugar industry successfully buried the evidence and misdirected the public with manipulated science. According to the sugar industry, sugar is a harmless source of energy and may even be an important part of a healthy “balanced” diet.

Dr. Cristin Kearns, a dentist and fellow at the University of California, made headlines when she published a paper2 detailing the sugar industry’s historical influence on dietary recommendations. Evidence also shows how the sugar industry influenced the scientific agenda of the National Institute of Dental Research (now the National Institute of Dental and Cranial Research), which back in 1971 created a national caries program, downplaying any links between sugar consumption and dental caries.3

The documentary, “Sugar Coated” — which features Kearns, investigative journalist Gary Taubes, author of “The Case Against Sugar,” and Dr. Robert Lustig, a leading expert on sugar metabolism and obesity — investigates the sugar industry’s once secret PR campaign, showing how it normalized excessive consumption by deflecting evidence implicating sugar as a cause of ill health. As noted in the film’s summary:4

“In order to continue sweetening the world’s food supply, thus securing continued profits, the sugar industry turned to the very same deceptions and tactics lifted from the tobacco industry. Using big sugar’s own internal documents on this strategy, ‘Sugar Coated’ reveals the well-oiled tricks of the trade to confuse the public about what is really driving the global pandemic of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.”

How a Woman Put Rheumatoid Arthritis into Remission

Story at-a-glance

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease in which your body destroys your joints and can be terminal. Less than one percent of people with the disease have a spontaneous remission
  • A former patient of mine tells the story of how she put her RA into remission in two years, using a nutritional protocol and healthy lifestyle changes

By Dr. Mercola

If you or someone you know has rheumatoid arthritis (RA), you’ll want to watch this video. In it, Sarah Allen, who is a former patient of mine, shares how she put rheumatoid arthritis into remission, and it’s a remarkable success story.

Rheumatoid arthritis was a passion of mine while I was still in active practice. I treated over 3,000 patients with this disease. I estimate 80 to 85 percent of them experienced significant recovery, if not remission, like Sarah did.

I ran into Sarah after giving a presentation recently in Orlando, where she happened to be in attendance. After talking to her, I decided we needed to share her important story as it would provide hope for so many who struggle with this disease.

She first came to see me in August of 2003. Even though she was only 28 years old at the time, she’d been experiencing symptoms of RA for about three or four years.

“I thought I was very healthy,’ she says. ‘I was young. I was a competitive triathlete. I believed I had a pretty good diet. So, I didn’t really understand why I was experiencing so much pain in my fingers and in my feet.

I had migrating pain, and a lot of tendonitis issues all throughout my body. It took the Western doctors a long time to diagnose me. It took about three years going to different doctors before they knew what was wrong.

It didn’t show in my blood; I didn’t have the RA factor, and my C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were normal. But it showed up on an X-ray.'”

Hallmark Signs of RA

One of the hallmark symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis is pain in your hands and/or feet. It tends to affect the proximal joints more so than the distal ones, i.e. the joints closest to your palm, for example, opposed to the joints further out in the fingers.

So, if you have pain there, especially if it’s symmetrical (affecting the same joints on both hands or feet), then almost by definition you have rheumatoid arthritis or an RA variant. It really doesn’t matter what the blood work shows.

RA is far less common than osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease, which is not as crippling. It’s actually easy to treat degenerative arthritis if you understand the components of a healthy lifestyle.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a far more complex disease. It’s an autoimmune disease; your body is destroying itself, and it can be terminal — some people have even been known to commit suicide from the crippling pain.

It’s quite notable that less than one percent of people with the disease have a spontaneous remission. Some disability occurs in 50 to 70 percent of people within five years after onset of the disease, and half will stop working within 10 years.

RA Is Typically Treated with Toxic Drugs

Traditional care also doesn’t have a lot of good hope for RA sufferers. All they do is ameliorate or treat the symptoms — typically using highly toxic drugs, including prednisone, methotrexate, and drugs that interfere with tumor necrosis factor, like Enbrel.

This is why I’m so passionate about spreading this information because as Sarah can attest, there’s an alternative, and this drug-free strategy really works. You don’t have to suffer needlessly in a conventional treatment model.

The 10 GMO Myths That Monsanto Wants You To Believe

From activistpost.com

Monsanto and their biotech buddies would have you believe that they are super-heroes, set on saving hungry children from starvation wearing a dazzling fake-green cape. In fact, in a recent attack on activists, Monsanto’s CEO Hugh Grant said that because critics “can afford” organic food, we don’t care about the plight of those who can’t afford it. “There is this strange kind of reverse elitism: If I’m going to do this, then everything else shouldn’t exist,” said Grant. “There is space in the supermarket shelf for all of us.”

Even Monsanto’s website is on the defense, with page after page attempting to justify what the biotech industry is doing to our food supply. It must be true if even leading “philanthropists” (and I use this term loosely) like Bill and Melinda Gates are behind the distribution of Monsanto crops across the globe. Right?

Actually, it’s all about the public’s perception. The push for acceptance of GMO foods has, thus far, been all about which team has the most money. Monsanto and their ilk can afford more television ads and more PR than anti-GMO activists can. Because the biotech companies, Big Food, and Big Agri can pay to spread their message, many people are convinced by their pure propaganda that GMOs are a necessary evil if the Third World is to avoid millions of slow, agonizing deaths by starvation. Because biotech is able to afford to blanket the media with their perspective, their view point is accepted as the correct one because that is the only perspective that many people ever hear.

But just because they shout the loudest, that doesn’t make it true.

How we address these misconceptions can mean the difference between swaying people to examine these claims more closely or causing them to stick their fingers in their ears and sing, “lalalalala…” to block us out. Here are some of the most common myths that Monsanto and friends would like you to believe about the wonderful world of GMOs.

Myth #1: No one has ever proven that GMOs are harmful to people.

Monsanto mouthpieces have been quoted time, time, and time again stating the untruth that genetically modified organisms have never been proven to harm people. It seems that they believe, like Joseph Goebbels, the uncontested King of Propaganda, that if you repeat a lie often enough, and with enough conviction, that it becomes the accepted truth.

The reality: Just a few of the results of a GMO diet (based on peer-reviewed studies) are: grotesque tumors, premature death, organ failure, gastric lesions, liver damage, kidney damage, severe allergic reactions, a viral gene that disrupts human functions…you can read more HERE.

Myth #2: GMO crops are the only way to solve world hunger.

The most common pro-GMO argument that you will hear these days is that genetically modified crops are the only way to feed the world’s burgeoning population. Without them, proponents claim that hunger will claim the lives of millions over the next decade. In the gospel of biotech, GMOs are the answer to world hunger. If you protest against GMO technology, you are cast as a cold-hearted elitist and the deaths of all of those suffering children in ***** (pick-a-3rd-world-country) rest firmly on your doorstep.

Here’s how to CUT OUT harmful sweets and sugars now that the holidays are over

Natural News) We get it: Those holiday sweets and treats are often very difficult to pass up, which is why we tend to pack on the pounds during the final month of the year. But you know what you have to do now, right?

Right. It’s time to give them up, though we grant you, that may be easier said than done.

And why is that? It’s because sugar is very addictive, and intentionally so. Junk food makers rely on it to keep you coming back for more. In fact, as Natural News has reported, sugar has been named the “most addictive and dangerous” substance of our time.

In addition to piling on the pounds, high sugar diets “are linked to increased risk of a number of health conditions” like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

But despite knowing that, it’s still hard to give up those sweet treats and then follow through on your plan, which — if successful — will give you better concentration, increased energy, better sleep, clearer skin, balanced hormones, and of course weight loss.

If you find yourself needing a little help shedding your post-holiday sugar urge, try these suggestions to help you start the new year lighter and healthier, as reported by the U.K.’s Daily Mail:

— Figure out your sugar triggers: “Many of us reach for sugary foods out of habit or for emotional comfort when we are stressed,” writes Hannah Braye for the paper. In order to break out of the habit, it’s vital for you to first identify what triggers your sweet tooth. For instance, do you begin your week sticking to your dietary plans but the weaken as the days go on? Eat sweets at the office? Do you like to snack late in the evening? Once you figure out your triggers you can address your weak moments.

How I beat type-2 diabetes using food, nutrition and exercise, avoiding a lifetime of insulin and toxic pharma drugs

(Natural News) Two decades ago, I was on the path to a lifetime of type-2 diabetes. Living on processed foods and lacking exercise, I suffered from hypoglycemia, high cholesterol and numerous other health problems. Like millions of people have now achieved, however, I turned my health around with simple but powerful changes in food, nutrition and exercise. In doing that, I learned something the medical establishment has long sought to prevent people from realizing: Type-2 diabetes can be prevented, reversed and CURED in most (but not all) cases. It’s not even very difficult in most cases, especially when addressed in its early stages. Type-2 diabetes isn’t really a “disease” in the classic sense; it’s just physiological cause and effect. The symptoms of diabetes, in other words, have causes. And if you remove those causes, you halt the symptoms and no longer have the “disease” at all. (This simple realization remains completely taboo in the medical establishment today, which continues to absurdly insist that disease occur spontaneously, without cause, in violation of the basic laws of the universe.)

Over the last 15 years, through Natural News and other sites like Prevention.news, I’ve helped tens of millions of other people learn about healing foods, nutrition and reversing disease. Yet the incessant propaganda of the processed food industry and the anti-science lies of the medical establishment continue to deprive the masses of the simple knowledge they need to eliminate type-2 diabetes for life.

This is all by design, of course. The pharma drug cartels don’t profit from people being well. They only profit from ongoing sickness and disease. To them, diabetes is a business model. It’s the same story with cancer, Alzheimer’s and many other diseases and symptoms. Already, the drug industry has figured out how to generate billions a year in revenue by tricking people into thinking they need to treat “numbers” such as high blood pressure numbers or cholesterol numbers. The numbers themselves become the “disease,” and toxic drugs are deemed to be successes based solely on whether they alter those numbers. (Yet artificial alterations of those numbers is medically useless. Nearly the entire pharmaceutical industry is a grand medical hoax.)

Discover a world without diabetes… we already know the solutions

Right now, we could all be living in a world that’s largely free of type-2 diabetes, yet the medical establishment (Big Pharma and the FDA) does not want that world to materialize. It would render their profits and power obsolete. So they trap people in a system of contrived medical ignorance combined with the monopolistic pushing of toxic, high-profit pharmaceuticals to “treat” their “symptoms” without ever solving the underlying health problems that causes those symptoms in the first place.

One-fifth of global deaths now linked to processed junk food and toxic ingredients Science now admits

Remember, it’s not just the fast food as pictured above, although these are obvious examples, but it’s the poisons and chemicals in your staples, like flour and so on. All these staples have been contaminated by unknown (to the average unaware shopper) substances and processes. Glyphosate being the biggie. That is sprayed relentlessly everywhere because Monsanto appears to have unprecedented inside control in terms of what gets into our food. Beware. EnvirowatchRangitikei

(Natural News) A new study conducted at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington (HealthData.org) and published in The Lancet medical journal finds that a shocking 20 percent of global deaths are caused by toxic foods, junk foods, processed foods and harmful food ingredients. In essence, the study reveals that the toxic food industry is now about as dangerous as Big Tobacco.

As covered in The Guardian:

The study, based at the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, compiles data from every country in the world and makes informed estimates where there are gaps… Diet is the second highest risk factor for early death after smoking. The problem is often seen as the spread of western diets, taking over from traditional foods in the developing world.

In other words, all the toxic food ingredients, processed foods, junk foods and fast foods that we’ve been warning you about for years are now being recognized by the science establishment to be one of the leading killers of human beings across our planet. Many of these foods are saturated with glyphosate and pesticides, and an increasing number are also genetically engineered. The food industry, in other words, is about as dangerous to human health as the tobacco industry, yet while Big Tobacco is highly regulated, there are virtually no enforced regulations that limit heavy metals, pesticides or dangerous chemical ingredients (like aspartame) in the U.S. food supply.

Sugar industry quietly paid scientists to point blame at fat

sugar-485055_1280 (1).jpg

This is kind of shocking isn’t it? All these years we’ve been told no fat, when sugar is the greater culprit in ruining our health. We need to be vigilant … profits over people is the corporate mantra. Guard your health carefully & question everything. Remember too, sugar’s been labeled one of the building blocks of cancer.
EnvirowatchRangitikei

myeclinik.com  A newly discovered cache of internal documents reveals that the sugar industry downplayed the risks of sugar in the 1960s.

In the 1960s, the sugar industry funded research that downplayed the risks of sugar and highlighted the hazards of fat, according to a newly published article in JAMA Internal Medicine.

by Camila Domonoske

The article draws on internal documents to show that an industry group called the Sugar Research Foundation wanted to “refute” concerns about sugar’s possible role in heart disease. The SRF then sponsored research by Harvard scientists that did just that. The result was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1967, with no disclosure of the sugar industry funding.

A Scientific Analysis of Glyphosate & GM Food by A Former Pro-GMO Scientist of 30 Years

With all the so called debate raging still about glyphosate & GM food (really not rocket science when you read the research, they just split hairs in the interests of corporate greed) this is an excellent listen. When somebody who has been part of the industry, switches sides & speaks out, we need to sit up and take notice. One glimpse of Prof Seralini’s rats was enough to convince me that glyphosate is not safe. But no they continue to defend it to the hilt in spite of all the evidence. As always do the research and ignore the debunkers who abound in MSM. All also corporately owned.

Dr. Thierry Vrain, former genetic engineer and soil biologist with Agriculture Canada, spoke with us today about his concerns with genetically engineered crops (GMOs) and more importantly, the use of Glyphosate (RoundUp). Dr. Vrain’s background in the field of genetic engineering (for 30 years), makes him an expert on this gene technology. He explained how a cell is genetically engineered and what happens after this random insertion process through a gene gun and how it can have unknown effects.

Since leaving Agriculture Canada 12 years ago, he has learned much more about the process of genetic engineering and the BT process (insect resistant) and the HT (herbicide resistant) crops that make up about 500 million acres. His primary concern at this time is the widespread use of Glyphosate which is a powerful herbicide, mineral chelator and a patented antibiotic. Dr. Vrain stated when speaking about Glyphosate:

“It’s almost as if the entire population of North American is on a low-grade antibiotic diet day in day out from birth, everyday, so this is the reality.”

Great Britain’s Most Outspoken Cardiologist Sets the Record Straight on Saturated Fats

So we’ve all been hammered endlessly about this risk! For at least three decades … or more. Another clue to why we must do our own research into what independent studies are saying … and NOT industry funded studies. If you have not yet woken up to the fact that corporations are about profits not people, and the medical industry was heisted for profit around one century ago, then you’re on a slippery slope. Sound extreme? I once would have thought so but after many thousands of hours of reading and examining the conclusions made by independent health professionals who stand to gain little if anything from their findings … I’ve concluded they are providing us with truth.

Listen to this Doctor speak of his findings … he’s interviewed by Dr Mercola.

By Dr. Mercola

Is saturated fat really the health hazard it’s been made out to be? Dr. Aseem Malhotra is an interventional cardiologist consultant in London, U.K., who gained quite a bit of publicity after the publication of his peer-reviewed editorial1 in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in 2013.

In it, he seriously challenges the conventional view on saturated fats, and reviews how recent studies have failed to find any significant association between saturated fat and cardiovascular risk.

In fact, Malhotra reports that two-thirds of people admitted to hospitals with acute myocardial infarction have completely normal cholesterol levels. Malhotra, founder of Action on Sugar, also works as an adviser to the U.K.’s National Obesity Forum.

“My focus has been, ‘what can we do as individuals collectively (the medical profession) to help curb demand on the health system?’” he says. “A lot of that is being driven by diet-related diseases.

According to the Lancet Global Burden of Disease Reports, poor diets now contribute to more disease and death than physical activities — smoking and alcohol combined …

As an interventional cardiologist, we can do life-saving procedures with people who have heart attacks through heart surgery. But to be honest, rather than saving them from drowning, I’d rather they wouldn’t be thrown into the river in the first place. This is really where my focus has shifted.

I think for many of us, as clinicians moving more towards intervention, I think the realization that what we can do in medicine is really quite limited at the treatment end and actually the whole ‘prevention is better than cure’ phrase is very true.”

Hospitals and Medical Personnel Are Far From Paragons of Health

Malhotra’s epiphany that something was wrong with the system came rather early. While working as a resident in cardiology, he performed an emergency stenting procedure on a man in his 50s who’d recently suffered a heart attack.

The following morning, Malhotra spoke to the man, giving him the usual advice about quitting smoking and improving his diet.

“Just when I was telling about healthy diet, how important that was, he was actually served burger and fries by the hospital. He said to me, ‘Doctor, how do you expect me to change my lifestyle when you’re serving me the same crap that brought me in here in the first place?’”

Looking around, he realized that a lot of healthcare professionals are overweight or obese, and hospitals serve sick patients junk food. He believes one of the first things that really needs to happen is to set a good example in hospitals.

“The hospital environment should be one that promotes good health, not exacerbates bad health,” he says. His journey began with an email to celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who did a lot of work campaigning for improved food in school canteens. Malhotra asked Oliver for ideas on how to improve hospital food.

“A couple of years later, I ended up going to the British Medical Association Annual Conference. I put a motion forward saying there should be a policy from the BMA to ban the selling of junk food in hospitals. It got an overwhelming majority vote.”

Diet and lifestyle changes are particularly important in light of the fact that medical errors and properly prescribed medications are the third most common cause of death after heart disease and cancer. Overmedication is a particularly serious problem among the elderly, who tend to suffer more side effects.

“Part of that is because there are very powerful vested interests that push drugs,” Malhotra says. “They even coax academic institutions and guideline bodies. People aren’t getting all the information to make decisions, whether or not they should take medications …

This is a major problem, especially [since] we’ve neglected or detracted from lifestyle changes, which are going to be much more impactful on your health and without side effects.”

Largest Cancer Study Ever Stuns Experts – They Were Wrong! Dr Mercola

By Dr. Mercola

Is it possible that chromosomal damage is simply a marker for cancer and not the actual cause of the disease? Compelling evidence suggests this is the case, and in the featured lecture, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gary Fettke reviews some of this evidence.

Having battled cancer himself, Fettke came to realize the influence of nutrition on cancer, and the importance of eating a diet high in healthy fats and low in net carbohydrates (total carbs minus fiber, i.e. non-fiber carbs). Fettke is not the only one promoting the metabolic model of cancer.

Earlier this year I interviewed Travis Christofferson, author of a phenomenal book called “Tripping Over the Truth: The Return of the Metabolic Theory of CancerIlluminates a New and Hopeful Path to a Cure,” on this topic.

The Metabolic Model of Cancer

The Cancer Genome Atlas project that began in 2006 set out to sequence the genomes of cancer cells. It was the largest government project ever conceived, involving 10,000 times the amount of genetic sequencing done by the Human Genome Project. Alas, the results didn’t conform to their original expectations…
