DOCUMENTS REVEAL SUGAR INDUSTRY PAID OFF SCIENTISTS, SHAPING MASS PERCEPTION OF NUTRITION FOR MONEY

The deviousness of corporate greed knows no end. Check out what the sugar industry has been up to, leading us all down the garden path with our health. As always follow the money. Sugar is evil at best in my opinion. It has been traced to many a health problem particularly cancer. Educate yourself and protect your immune system naturally. I should mention, don’t rely on mainstream media to give you the data on independent research. Go to the research of those who had nothing to gain from their results in terms of money. There you will be more likely to find truth. EnvirowatchRangitikei

Collective Evolution

According to newly uncovered documents, in the 1960s the sugar industry began funding research to cast doubt on sugar’s role in heart disease, mainly by pointing the finger at fat instead.

A recently published analysis based on correspondence between a sugar trade group and researchers from Harvard University clearly demonstrates how food and beverage makers actively shape the public’s understanding of nutrition for their own financial gain.

The Evidence

In 1964 a group known as The Sugar Association went over a campaign to address any “negative attitudes toward sugar” after studies linking sugar with heart disease began to emerge, according to documents that were dug up from the now public archives. The following year the group approved a project called “Project 226,” which involved paying researchers from Harvard the equivalent of todays $48,900 USD for an article reviewing scientific literature, supplying the materials they wanted reviewed and reviewing drafts of the article prior to publication.

The result was an article, published in 1967, which concluded there was “no doubt” that reducing cholesterol and saturated fat was the only dietary guideline necessary to prevent heart disease effectively. The consistency of the literature on fat and cholesterol were overstated by researchers, and studies on sugar were severely downplayed, according to the analysis.

Fructose causes genetic changes in the brain that increases risk of disease

(NaturalHealth365) It is no secret that sugary drinks, sweets, and other processed foods containing high fructose corn syrup are detrimental to your health. The pervasiveness of high fructose corn syrup in the Americans diet has even been blamed for the epidemic of obesity, type 2 diabetesand related diseases. But now, scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles, have started to uncover the exact reasons why fructose is linked to so many ills.

The U.S. food manufacturing industry has found high fructose corn syrup to be one of the cheapest sweeteners available. Because of this, it is found in a vast array of foods, including not only soda and candy bars, but also baby food, breakfast cereal, yogurt, salad dressing, baked goods and even so-called nutrition bars.

Researchers there have discovered that fructose actually alters hundreds of genes in the brain. Those changes are linked to development of many diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, depression, bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, among others. But the scientists also discovered a nutrition-based, natural solution: the omega-3 fatty acid known as DHA can reverse these harmful effects.

8,000 Scientific Papers Link Refined White Sugar To Chronic Disease

NZ is “a nation with a sweet tooth and our consumption far exceeds the WHO recommendations. According to the 2008/09 NZ Adult Nutrition Survey, males eat 120g of total sugars a day and females eat 96g (this includes the sugar from milk products and fruit).”  Consumer

Linking Refined White Sugar To Chronic Disease

According toMedical Xpress, the average American consumes nearly 20 teaspoons, or about 78 grams, of sugar daily, which is far more than the maximum level recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA).

One of the worst things you can do to your body is feed it sugar — not necessarily natural sugar like the kind found in fruit, but refined sugar. A team of scientists from the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF) recently pored through more than 8,000 scientific papers on how sugar affects the body and came to the conclusion that it not only makes people fat but also makes them sick.

“nearly three-quarters of all packaged and processed foods contain added sugar…”

The project, which has been dubbed SugarScience, exposes sugar as a primary culprit in the formation of metabolic disease, which can lead to conditions like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Lead author Laura Schmidt, a UCSF School of Medicine professor, says her team’s findings are comprehensible — sugar is highly toxic to the body and vital organs, including the liver.

“Too much sugar causes chronic metabolic disease in both fat and thin people…”   Robert Lustig – (Pediatric Endocrinologist)

According to their investigation, nearly three-quarters of all packaged and processed foods contain added sugar. This sugar is typically listed under 61 different names, including things like high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), dextrose, evaporated cane juice and sucrose. It is often difficult to identify added sugar because of this, and current regulatory requirements don’t mandate that suggested daily values of both natural and added sugar be identified.  Read more

So how is our intake of sugar in NZ?

Consumer reports:

“We’re a nation with a sweet tooth and our consumption far exceeds the WHO recommendations. According to the 2008/09 NZ Adult Nutrition Survey, males eat 120g of total sugars a day and females eat 96g (this includes the sugar from milk products and fruit).

Sucrose (table sugar) was the major contributor, with males eating 55g (14 teaspoons) and females 42g (10.5 teaspoons). Almost one-quarter of the sucrose came from sugar and sweets, followed by non-alcoholic beverages and fruit.

Our kids fare even worse. The 2002 National Children’s Nutrition Survey found that the average daily intake for sucrose for boys was 67g (17 teaspoons) and for girls 61g (15 teaspoons). Over one-quarter of the sucrose came from beverages and one-fifth from sugar and sweets.”

So … best kick your sugar habit if you have one!

Find a suitable natural sweetener to replace sugar, and whatever you do don’t head for the chemical sweeteners like aspartame which will do you even more harm than what you’re replacing! Cut it down gradually until you’re free. Remember too it’s addictive so it can take a while depending on your endurance abilities. However you do it it’s going to improve your health. On that the evidence is pretty clear.
