What stayed in my memory from our coverage was the visit the residents got just weeks before the fire, instructing them to remain in their apartments if a fire should ever break out. Recordings of phone calls revealed this is what they did. One was left with the feeling that it was a complete cover up … may justice be done for those victims, many more it would appear, than the ‘official’ account gave us. EWR
Watch at the link below as Mark Steele gives his opinion on this event as being linked to smart meters:
Smart Meters are not compulsory in NZ. I hear folk saying they’ve been harrassed here also, just persistently contacted and told they have to have one. They are being bluffed (unless they included it in the fine print of their contract) … don’t fall for it. I know of one elderly gentleman in a wheelchair who directed his powerco not to install one, and they did anyway. He demanded they remove it and he thought they had but they hadn’t. Households have been bombarded with texts, emails, letters and phone calls
Citizens Advice reports a stream of complaints from harassed customers
Letter from one supplier said: ‘We have legal requirement to change your meter’
Energy giants were last night accused of flouting trading laws by pressuring homeowners into getting smart meters.
Families are being told the digital devices are a legal requirement when they are not. Trading standards chiefs have told power firms that misleading customers in this way is a breach of consumer laws.
Households have been bombarded with texts, emails, letters and phone calls telling them they need a smart meter.
Smart or Advanced Meters as Kiwis know them, are being rolled out in NZ currently. Some are aware of the risks they pose to our health (heart problems, headaches, sinus problems & cancer) not to mention the escalated power bills that people are experiencing. I hear often of cases of severely inflated power bills since the installation of a Smart/Advanced Meter … and any proposal that it’s the meter is generally dismissed by the Powercos. Some of these are as extreme as double to triple the normal cost.
In my discussions with folk on these meters I find they think because there’s no tangible effect for them like physical symptoms it’s all safe. (For some though there are physical symptoms … this is covered on our Smart Meter page. It’s of note that many report disappearance of the symptoms after the Smart Meter removal). But even with no symptoms the radiation from electromagnetic devices is a slow-kill. Like food additives that are carcinogenic, so also the effects of radiation from these meters has a slow and cumulative long term effect. The Take Back Your Power documentary by Josh Del Sol illustrates the effects of radiation with a very disturbing story about a young man who died of brain cancer … he had been living in a hostel room near a cell phone mast at his university. So also had many other previous occupants his mother later found out. She is filmed there turning page after literal page reading out the names of others who had also died of cancer! Is it really worth the risk to just ignore this information & discard it as mumbo jumbo?
The following video ‘The Truth About Smart Meters’ by Brian Thiesen will enlighten you further about the risks posed by Smart/Advanced Meters.
Brian Thiesen is Chairman of Interior Smart Meter Awareness. Considered to be an expert on the subject of Smart Meters Brian has been raising awareness about the dangers of smart meters, in British Columbia and globally.
He has talked with some of the top Doctors, military weapons experts, electricians, engineers. Read more about Brian at this link.

Here is a sign posted by a Taumaranui resident who had their locked meter box broken intoto install a Smart Meter (aka Advanced Meter). As you can see the response they said they got from the lines people when following this up was equally as telling… “we own you people”!
While it appears little known that there are options for having these meters removed and replaced, it also seems that Taumaranui has only one supplier. This makes things more difficult in terms of no bargaining power. The use of the term ‘jack boot’ is therefore not that extreme given the whole scenario and the way these folks have been treated. It is all symptomatic of the direction our country is headed with an ex-banker for a Prime Minister who clearly places profits and corporate interests above the interests of his constituents.
What is especially disturbing about this event (and it’s not an isolated incident, I’ve heard myself of installations happening while folk were not home) is that in the comments and discussion around this, many others have been similarly treated. The repeated tale of outrageous hikes in charges, one for instance from $100 to $150 approx. plus the Nelson woman last year who received a bill for $800 for her two bedroom house! And this is something I’ve both read about & heard, time and time again. We are fed the line that the meters are more accurate and customers have been undercharged prior to Smart Meter installation. Not to the tune of a $1000 hike? Surely? … yet this is what I’ve heard more than once. A difference of $20 is feasible but not $600 or more. See here a proposed explanation for these hikes by a retired electrical engineer.
“…over 250 people have commented with some saying they had similar experiences with unexpectedly large power bills and problems after the installation of smart meters.” Stuff.co.nz
Disturbing also is the detail about the elderly turning off their hot water in order to buy food or not turning on any heating because they can’t pay. Again I know of this happening in my district (the Rangitikei) where an elderly person is being charged $150 and upwards in a tiny flat with few if any appliances operating. She has switched off the hot water, has no heater and goes to bed early to keep warm. And finally, the above sign and the comments corroborate that folk are being pressured to leave the district because of the costs. ‘The town is dying’ says the sign.
Now,on that topic, we have been led to believe for years that towns are dying because people somehow mysteriously allowed it. They all moved away. We even had a prominent economist telling us recently that they were zombie towns and pretty much had to go. Well, people left because of decisions made by our respective governments to close down amenities and resources like the hospitals, pharmacies and banking. I know … I remember it happening! It was about the time those governments had borrowed large sums of money and gotten a once prosperous and fully employed nation into un-repayable debt, followed by Rogernomics and belt tightening for the poorer folks, not the wealthy mind. And the former being blamed for the debt while corporations enjoy huge tax breaks. And now this from the power companies and we were told privatizing them would lower prices. Competition, the market and all that. We’re still waiting nearly three decades on. On that note, check out our (UN) Agenda 21/2030 pages for why all this is happening. Particularly Agenda 21/2030 in NZ. Watch the video there by former Australian politician Anne Bressington.
As this sign very perceptively outlines folk, we are being ripped off and our southern clean, green paradise is fast morphing into a fascist regime. Think, TPPA and all that has entailed in terms of keeping us out of the loop then claiming to seek our feedback/opinion/input. Their tactics provide the illusion of having sought our opinion … it is nothing more folks, in case you hadn’t already noticed. See how they provide you with forms containing multi choice options none of which you wanted to choose anyway? Like the recently proposed flag debacle that has cost the country $28 million. Shame.
Returning now to the Smart Meters themselves, be aware, they are NOT compulsory. If you already have one, there are options about its removal and replacement. (If you don’t have one yet, inform your powerco you do not consent to one … in writing … in advance). For further information on that Kiwis, visit stopsmartmeters.org.nz/ and note they have a page there explaining how to get rid of a Smart Meter. The meters are also known here as Advanced Meters. (Folks from other countries, there are similar sites in your countries, just google.)
You should also be aware that health professionals have warned about the health risks these meters carry. Predictably the authorities deny this, however the stopsmartmeters website has already logged before and after testimonies from Kiwis who had their Smart Meters removed. See also the links here for further information on that, with a video trailer featuring a health professional explaining the effects from long term exposure to a Smart Meter. See also in this video what the meters when in proximity do to your blood. Above all, educate yourself further by watching the award winning doco Take Back Your Power by Josh Del Sol at his website. It is accessible for a very small charge. Or consider holding a viewing in your town (contact stopsmartmeters for details). Further info on Smart Meters is also available on our Smart Meter pages. Spread the word and resist this move.
With all the information now flowing about how a smart meter is not compulsory and notification of intention to install is required – how can these companies continue on their aggressively persistent mission to ensure we all have one? Legally that is.
Following our recent post about the installation of a Smart (electricity) Meter on a NZ home in Taumaranui where the owner had not given consent and had in fact locked the meter – yet undeterred the lines people broke into the meter box! And here we have more of the same, this time a Smart water Meter was installed. The report comes from stopsmartmeters.org.nz …
Smart water meter installed in Waiuku NZ without consent
This morning www.stopsmartmeters.org.nz received an email from a concerned resident of Huia Street in Waiuku to say that on Monday (February 29, 2016) she found a card in her letter box informing her that a smart water meter had been installed for her home as part of a trial.
This home owner did not consent to the installation of this device which is designed to produce microwave radiation to send data about water use. In fact just the previous Friday she had received notification from the company that her “water meter did not need to be replaced.”
According to Watercare’s website the smart water meters that it is installing will transmit only once per day; however this information cannot be independently verified at this stage as the company did not state the make and model of the meter on its website. (The type of smart water meter trialed in Tairua transmits every eight seconds.)
The type of radiation produced by smart water meters (and smart electricity meters) has been classified as possible carcinogen (class 2B) by the World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer.
You can find more info at the above site on how to avoid getting a Smart (aka Advanced) Meter or how to get rid of one if you already have one. The site manager is contactable and helpful if you are having difficulties. Also check out our Smart Meter pages for further info &/or follow us to receive updates. Most importantly, watch the doco Take Back Your Power, links are at the site.

Fire risk is one of the less well known problems with Smart Meters aka, in NZ, Advanced Meters. The oft quoted justifications with them are ‘accuracy’ and ‘safety’, however the first is debunked immediately with many reports of highly inflated power bills, both abroad and here in NZ (and I mean highly inflated, I’ve heard of bills over $1k!). Safety however has been not so well proven to date or, any risks have been carefully concealed. This was evident in the doco Take Back Your Power. Here we have the fire risk in greater detail. These meters generate revenue for power companies by collecting data, a huge industry. People report difficulties with the operation of appliances and the levels of pulsing and subsequent emission of RF radiation is up to 190,000 times per day creating a huge health risk. This is borne out by experts in the field of radiation risks. Additionally the meters come with a remote disconnect ability which, when put to use, cause arcing and subsequent fire risk. There is more, please watch the video and be informed. If you have one of these meters already in close proximity to where you work, sleep or simply spend your day, consider having it removed. For help with that visit Stop Smart Meters NZ Kiwis. There are similar sites world wide for further information. Research the health and other risks and make an informed decision about them. If you don’t already have one, it is easier to prevent installation than it is to get one removed.
Here is a smart (aka advanced) meter story that will shock you! Learn of the hell this woman has been through since a smart meter was installed on her home … with neither her knowledge nor her consent! A long tale of basically passing the buck by all concerned. (Names are changed for privacy reasons outlined in the article).
By Catherine J. Frompovich, from Activist Post: January 4th started off as a typical day for me. I woke up, made some coffee, filed some applications for jobs, started laundry, cleaned the kitchen and began preparing for an interview I had later in the day. I had gone upstairs to move laundry from the washer to the dryer and fold the clothes from the dryer when all the sudden the power went out. I figured no big deal, we have this happen all the time, and it will come back on. Sure enough, it came back on and then immediately went back off. I waited. It didn’t come back on. So, I decided to go downstairs….As I got to the bottom of the stairs, I could hear this noise. It sounded like feedback in stereo speakers that had a pulse to it. I stood there at the bottom of the steps trying to determine where the noise was coming from, but it sounded like it was all around me. What happened next – it happened so fast – was a flash, like lightning inside my house. I literally cradled my head and dropped to the floor, while my dogs started going crazy. I waited for the popping to stop and I opened my eyes….
