Smart Meters are not compulsory in NZ. I hear folk saying they’ve been harrassed here also, just persistently contacted and told they have to have one. They are being bluffed (unless they included it in the fine print of their contract) … don’t fall for it. I know of one elderly gentleman in a wheelchair who directed his powerco not to install one, and they did anyway. He demanded they remove it and he thought they had but they hadn’t. Energy giants were last night accused of flouting trading laws by pressuring homeowners into getting smart meters.
Families are being told the digital devices are a legal requirement when they are not. Trading standards chiefs have told power firms that misleading customers in this way is a breach of consumer laws.
